From bees to mushrooms.

From bees to mushrooms.

From bees to mushrooms—this path may sound strange, but it's hard to describe it any other way. I spent several years studying the ins and outs of beekeeping, and it seemed like the only right way for me to start a smallholding.

But, as the saying goes, there's always someone who can do something better than you, and there's always something equally, if not more, interesting than what you've devoted so much time to.

Yes, beekeeping as a hobby and a small business is very interesting, but everything is measured by the start-up costs, practical experience, maintenance costs, and the final product yield.

With a fairly large start-up cost, even if I start with just a couple of hives, I'll see a harvest once a year—or more accurately, per season, if you count the May, June, and August honey harvests.

The costs are considerable, as you'll need to buy a beekeeper's suit for yourself and your family, a chisel, a honey extractor, and other equipment needed for a single hive, whether it's for hundreds of hives or just one.

But, to be honest, while I was focused solely on beekeeping, I didn't think much about it.

At some point, I thought I'd mastered almost all the basics of beekeeping and needed to get started, but then the idea of trying mushroom cultivation struck me.

Today, if you search online, you can find mycelium from various mushrooms for sale, and the question of choosing the right species for cultivation deserves several separate posts where you can reflect on the profitability and individual capabilities of this endeavor.

To be brief, I settled on a mushroom called oyster mushroom, which, in principle, can be easily grown in your garage or basement and started with minimal financial investment, and the harvest can be collected several times a year, a hundred more attractive than honey.

Later, I'll gradually share some of my ideas and filtered thoughts about mushroom growing in great detail. For now, I'm interested in observing how my ideas shift; this can sometimes be useful.

Yes, sometimes it's useful to leave the rigid shell of ideas that seemed fundamental and start something new.
