Okay, so he ripped out pulse and he reinstalled pulse. Anyways, thanks David. I have never had an issue. Any time I have always plugged my headphones in, that is what I use to record a podcast. It always sees them. The only thing, it has not happened since the new version, but sometimes if you are disconnecting a USB, like the speakers, and you plug in a headphone, it might, for some reason, it might not recognize it. I always found that just restarting it, the distro automatically sees the new device. But since 2004, actually since about 1804, I have not had that issue.
