2020 - The Crypto Year In Review (Incomplete And Biased, Obviously)

in LeoFinance3 years ago

We started this year with Bitcoin at $7,125. It's now $24,803. More than 300% appreciation.

We also started this year with Hive at $0, meaning it wasn't existing at all. The first day listed on Coingecko for Hive is March 23th, at a value of $0.17. It is now $0.11, after reaching as high as $0.91 on April 27th.

If you look at $0.11 versus $0.17, you're tempted to say that Hive depreciated with about 40%. But, in reality, everyone who had STEEM, at the moment of fork, more than doubled their portfolio. For a while, we had the cake AND ate it. Of course, every miracle only last for a limited amount of time, so now we're back in the territory where we have to keep building, in order to generate value, and not rely on black swan events.

And that's where projects like Leo Finance came into play. It's another place where you can double your cake, so to speak. Not only you get paid for your posts in HIVE, but also in LEO (which, at the moment of writing, is a little more than double the value of HIVE). Leo Finance is a very good example of "layer 2" projects in terms of building on top of HIVE. There are other examples as well, like games, for instance, but Leo Finance is closer to the initial goal of the project, which was "proof of brain", or getting paid for writing.

But not only STEEM / HIVE ecosystem witnessed a drastic transformation. Other parts of the crypto world exploded as well, and I'm talking about DeFi, and, more recently, about ETH 2.0, which marks, in my opinion, the real beginning of the crypto era. An era in which money can flow in any direction without the need of a middle man. DeFi brought to the crypto world mechanisms which existed only in the classical banking systems, linking together individual actors in a live, thriving ecosystem. Of course, there is always the danger of losing your funds if you're not careful, but at least you're the one in control now and can take full responsibility for it (if, and when it will happen, that is).

2020 was a good year, in terms of crypto. There might have been other things which went horrendously bad, like the pan-reaction to the pandemic, rooted in medieval fear, but the crypto world went ok.

I'm really looking forward to the next year, I have the hunch that, if 2020 was an ok year for crypto, 2021 will be epic.

Thanks to everyone involved in these projects for the last 365 days. Wishing you all the best in 2021!

Wanna know when you're getting paid?

I know the feeling. That's why I created hive.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your HIVE rewards

It's free to use, but if you think this is a useful addition, I'd appreciate your witness vote.

Thank you!

I'd say this year was a pretty good one in crypto considering the pandemic! Imagine if that hadn't happened and where the industry would be now? I think we're set for a pretty big explosion in 2021 if the world comes out of the pandemic. It will be a new world for sure!

Hope you had a good Christmas and all the best for 2021

I can't really complain about how my STEEM/HIVE went as I became an orca thanks to the airdrop. I have bought more HIVE since then and I have confidence it will appreciate. We have something special here and just need to get more people to realise that. I'm having fun anyway.

Hope 2021 is great for you.

I still have my steem waiting on steem not even knowing to cash it out, I never learned to cash out, never got a cent of bitcoin LOL so I feel like I lose in life a little when I saw it rising cos I delayed when steem was high, I delayed to buy btc too but all because I really never had the tech knowledge and my closest within the community just drifted away and they were all the ones reminding me how to things, truth is I was always a content creator, i fail at the business part of this

I probably ought to be more into the financial side, but I'm not really driven by money. I don't worry about what might have been. You could use Beeswap to convert your STEEM to HIVE if you want. You would get a pretty good rate now. I do wonder why STEEM does so well given the lack of development, but then look at Bitcoin. Sometimes there is no real logic to it.

Be happy.

I've just checked and you have nearly 4000 STEEM. Moving that across to here and powering up would really boost your votes. You could do some good with that.

I do really need to cash out though :( even if little 2020 you know
Thanks for the advice, I'm just unable to try on my own, I never powered down or tried anything on my own. I am a mere content creator. Now I don't have as much time as I used to to network, so I distribute my time in the networks more evenly, but when I was in steem it absorbed me almost me entirely to keep up the engagament and all, to the point I was not working on the music fast enough. Now 2020 was a huge challenge both in health and economy and more than ever I need to be organized, of course I'll keep coming and posting as long as there are a few friends that still offer feedback, because for me that was always my main goal, a window more to show and share. I'm not posting less than I used to, I always was a slow poster, but I'm not in discord shows and up to date with the changes and it's easy to fall out of the loop. I don't know how some artists are verified, or even how to cash out my liquid steem, I should have done though when btc was lower, now I don't know if it's worth to wait. I tried to get in and was asking me to make a tron account and I felt overwhelmed and I haven't tried since. In moments like this I miss "helpie" and the friends I made there. I'm still in touch with many all scattered around, Serena, Cams, Meno, Pechi... we´re just scattered but we kept our bonds

Cashing out can be difficult. You need an account on something like Coinbase or Wirex that lets you exchange crypto for local currency. If you need the money then maybe someone you really trust can do it for you if you transfer to them. I have helped some people out with that before.

Of course you want to concentrate on your art. I love that so many artists are on here so it is not just about crypto. You can help each other out.

Stay well.

Thanks, it's been a struggling year and I just would have wanted to move it at least to a wallet where it was more favourable or to currencies that were more stable or with prospect go grow, and yes, I have never cashed out, but I have also regretted not having done during better times due to the lack of knowledge, get the first step is getting myself a wallet, so which is a "reliable" point to start? I'm grateful for the advice (not difficult to setup hopefully) all the tech part overwhelmes me deeply, I only love to share content

All the best and congrats for the orca status. And for everything you do to keep the community running. Cheers!

All the best on 2021 for you and your family!

Igualmente! Feliz año!

Like you said 2020 was good for crypto. Fully agree to it. Also it brought back what was lost in 2018, namely trust in crypto, also from the big boys who play with money in a different league.

2021 will be even better, as new development is coming. I hop also that hive manages to cross the 1$ mark next year.

Yeap, I have the same target for HIVE at the end of 2021. Let's wait and see. Enjoy 2021!

Thanks, man. I won't say yes, I won't say no. So, it may (or may not) happen. Wishing you all the best too!
