Let's Start With Some Context Here
Based on the top 100 google searches I was able to construct where the state of global consciousness is focused. I started this project as a way to do more research on SEO and it turned into a fun game of trying to understand society.
I didn't finish the whole list, and am looking for some help with the remaining words.
Basically I took a top googled word and made an attempt to understand why it is ranking so high.
It's No Surprise That YouTube & Facebook Ride The Top Of The Charts
It may not shock you that youtube, facebook and google are where people spend most of their time. Our society is mainly using the internet for communication and connection with others which is why gmail and whatsapp web are now the main apps being searched in order to send information to others.
Online Purchases and Email
Online purchases now account for more than 50% of purchases made when compared to in person brick and mortar with amazon being the main source for making online purchases.
The use of Hotmail shocked me, because I missed that place in time where creating an account was cool, but it would appear that next to gmail, Hotmail is the second most used platform for email and search engines.
Entertainment, Netflix & Google Translate?
Entertainment has been at the forefront of the American minds for the last 2 decades and Netflix is right at the top of the list for most people.
Here is one I didn’t expect to rank so high, but with a global economy it would make sense that google translate has become one of the most used tools for helping communicate in other languages. Why commit to all the time it takes to learn a language, when you could just pull out your phone and instantly be able to speak to anyone in any of the major languages!
The Social Apps Take The Cake
Instagram is right up there with facebook when it comes to the social app arena and it turns out that most Americans spend an average of 3 hours per day using just these 2 apps combined! That’s two and a half for FB and 30 minutes spent looking at pictures and video on the gram. Twitter strolls in on the list, but doesn’t have nearly as much time spent, coming in at just over 3 minutes. Which makes you wonder how Elon is getting so much attention for a small amount of time spent on his favorite social app.
The 2 I just don't understand
Yahoo is another hot search for people who have their yahoo mail accounts and are checking regularly. These are also the same people who still use eBay as a way to buy and sell merchandise online. Honestly I have no idea if that is a real correlation, but I also don't know anyone who still takes either of these seriously. (no offense, maybe I'm the crazy one)
I've spent over 20 minutes working out why these words are so highly rated, which is where I draw the line on time per post, but you can see the remainder of the list below:

Pinterest - One of the best places to find quality information. It's not saturated with all the BS. Simple image and you know what you're getting yourself into.
It's actually one of the largest social networks I target as a social media manager as the conversion and quality of the visitor blows nearly every other social network out of the water. Most likely people are looking for how to market on it or for quality posts.
It's interesting I never really thought of looking at the top 100 to kind of get a pulse of the world but that actually totally makes sense!
Yahoo- ebay lol I laugh about it but I believe it's majority older people who grew up on these two platforms. There was a time when Yahoo heavily promoted and tried to take google on head first.
