My Thoughts: Hive Will Thrive Despite Any Stakeholder, Not Because Of Them

Appealing to Authority On Hive

Where blogging is concerned, Hive has no complaint department. Your content will appeal to some, and not to others. Every post made with honest intent has some value, and the community should ensure that. Upvotes are normal. Downvotes are normal.

Who Is On Hive?

The people who set up shop here and stay for the long haul are a different sort of creature. People arriving with an entitlement mindset find out pretty fast this isn't the place for them. People who thrive are here to carve out their own destiny, and do not feel entitled to the resources of others. Hive is a niche.

Is Hive Fragile?

I'm here to challenge the notion that any one stakeholder should be capable of destroying HIVE. If they are, I say let HIVE be destroyed-- it deserves to be destroyed. The NINJA MINE DEVELOPMENT FUND made STEEM fragile. With it removed HIVE is significantly less fragile. For HIVE to succeed long term, it needs to be anti-fragile. Some would say it's very fragile now, because of the user churn. I don't really agree with this. 80% of new users probably will not stay, because it is such a niche. This churn is not a measure of failure or fragility, it's a measure of preference.

Why Does Hive Exist?

Does Hive exist to replace social media? Does it exist as a platform for mass adoption? I believe the answer to both of these questions is NO. Hive from a blogging perspective is a niche, it will always be a niche. Could it be a larger niche? Absolutely, much larger. Hive will never be appealing to those who crave centralized control and protection from an authority, let's face it. It's appealing to people who believe in self-determination. I see people who crave authority come and go, because they don't understand this, and that's fine. It's NOT for everybody. Blogging IS NOT the only application for this blockchain, so I am totally fine with the blogging part remaining a niche.

Inflation And Time Will Lessen The Impact Of Whales

This is already proven in the data that folks like @penquinpabo and @dalz publish all the time. The distribution continues to improve. If you like it here, and want to influence the future, post more, earn more, buy more, vote more. Be the change you seek in others. Hive is a great microcosm for creating capital (posting/curating), and putting that capital to work (delegating, interest, etc.).

Indeed, there are some problems with people who really don't get it how hive is supposed to work and what content should be posted. I mean we all have passions and things to write about, but then there are also some with completely different intentions and that might not be in the favour of the blockchain or the other users. I noticed that too and I'm really sad there are not some more strict rules.

Thanks so much for the support to become a dolphin, I wish I would know how to express my excitement and gratitude! 🤗

You're so close now little sister!!

Can't wait for it! :D

Strict rules on a decentralized system are a non starter I think. We all have to forge our own path and enforce our own rules with the tools we have.

You're so close to Dolphin now!

Indeed. Thanks so much! Making my last steps on starting to swim with the dolphins thanks to you and your amazing community! :)

I was just talking with someone today about another blockchain that is content focused and we agreed that in the end it is all a niche, which kinda led us into questioning why even bloat the chain with content since the content does not matter...besided the points. I agree with the single user not really having an effect on whether things are make or break and in the current case it is all about the other party maybe not earning as quick as they like. Both parties in this case should be ignored and not be given attention. Unfortunately these things influence the "majority" or get visibility at a scale that will make you think they matter the fact that "influencers" or certain accounts have a blind following is something that should be combated on crypto social/content - and with it being niche means the chain can be a lot more opinionated, it is maybe time for it to exercise that power. by disconnecting stake from the public reward system through a capping algo. The current hive state just mimics broken society instead of doing something logical.

Great input! I think that is an early adoption issue that more users and better distribution will lessen the impact of. That only gets fixed with time and perseverance.

I personally feel that content discovery on hive is actually not easy.

#hive doesn't give the addiction of social media and that is where the problem lies to me.

I am all about hive on Twitter and in Nigeria but it is difficult to get n new users to be fully addicted.

I have been thinking of ways to keep new users active because recruiting is not enough, retaining is important.
Quality needs to be relative in this community for adoption to be taken to the next level .

I believe hive is going to go places.

Not everyone gets it. Maybe that will change in future as better interfaces are created, but I'm not so sure.

I hope it actually does get better

It will be interesting @joshman, if the long-awaited promise of SMTs ever shows up, what the effect of future SMT-based communities will be on "blunting" some of the nastier "sharp edges" one can encounter "in here?"

You have likely already read it, but I really like @blocktrade's post sharing in more depth and detail the basis on which some of this functionality could be built. Maybe some day we'll find out together how closely the reality lines up with the expectations and hopes.

Ah, SMTs, the white buffalo!

How things develop should be interesting to watch.

It goes without saying that #HIVE is most well known as a blogging/vlogging platform, but many of us see its future potential. Remember when Amazon just was a bookselling website? Look at them now! I honestly believe that HIVE has that potential. Decentralized Applications like the Splinterlands Trading Card Game have shown this to be true.

It may take a few years for HIVE to become an household name. Rome was not built in a day. HIVE is unique. It is its own creature. Comparing HIVE to FaceBook, Instagram, Reddit, Twitter is like comparing apples to oranges. Not saying you are doing that @joshman, but some do have that mindset.

Indeed we have no central authority, no CEO, or a face. The community is the authority and the face of HIVE. Communities right now take care of the problem of trolls. We can police ourselves. Spammers? Mute them or just dismiss them from your community. Very easy.

I challenge anyone to find a blockchain with a more inclusive, compassionate, helpful group of people. With all its foibles and imperfection (and I have accounts with other blockchain social sites because I am nosey that way) I will stick with HIVE. It has so much more to offer!

Awesome comments Dan. As with anywhere else, I think that if you come looking for drama, you're going to find it. Some people feed off of it. So far the culture here hasn't been all that friendly to drama kings and queens.

I think you just perfectly described what hive is.
Like I say to a lot of newbies I know personally, Hive isn't what you heard. It is not a platform to post and "earn money". That is the mentality that a lot of new users come in with. And that is why a lot of them don't get to stay around long once the rewards and engagement on their "introduceyourself" post wanes. You've got to build your way to the top with convincing consistence or at least for now, invest (buy) your way to the top.

I agree, unless you have the social support structures, all that is left are monetary ones.

Finally! Someone said it!

80% of new users probably will not stay, because it is such a niche. This churn is not a measure of failure or fragility, it's a measure of preference.

I agree. As much as we wanted to have mass adoption immediately, not many will stay. It will probably happen long term, not in a 1~2 years time.

What is mass adoption really? Hive is the next facebook-like platform?

I initially thought about Facebook, but there's nothing social about Facebook anymore. I'm now thinking about thousands of niche specific blog sites, each with their own vibrant communities, that are bootstrapped in Hive.

A lot of people aren't on social media to earn money. This often frustrates and confuses people only on social media to earn money. So when I hear people complain about prices and rewards, I think prices really only affects witnesses and developers. Reward value only affects people who are only here to maximize profits.

That's the thing with HIVE. Having family and friends on traditional social media makes it very sticky. Hive doesn't have that stickiness initially, so the focus on money comes into play. The people HIVE eventually sticks to are less concerned about money I think. Perhaps we need to find ways to create more stickiness.

. The NINJA MINE DEVELOPMENT FUND made STEEM fragile. With it removed HIVE is significantly less fragile.

except it is still here..

And can't be accessed without a hard fork. I think it is going to be converted to HBD over time according to what I read, and its dispersal will be voted on from the proposal system.

it's now in the HiveFund, Proposal System..

So in my understanding the big stakeholder have it now..

I suppose if you want to view the proposal system as a slush fund for the big stakeholders.

as it is designed with the return proposal, yes

biggest stakes win

You've basically said everything. One owns their future and their success or failure is up to them. Hive is relatively still there for the taking.

Agreed, thanks for visiting!

I speak in GIF

U Troglodyte!

Someone had to say it.

Might as well be the @joshman...
