When Decentralization Fails

Looking at the concept of decentralization, I have come to a simple conclusion— "it is more said than done. This is not to say that decentralization isn't a good or excellent idea, it is simply an issue with human nature!

Is it that humans are not made to be decentralized, but just love to be decentralized?

Maybe, we can blame mother nature, or we can leave blaming and rather accept things as they are.

Even in the heart of decentralization, we just find ways to carve out some level of centralization, not because we always wanted to, but most times, we are left with very little choices due to our knowledge, expertise, and resources.

Nature & Centralization

First, centralization is naturally born from the need for leadership. Leadership is not a skill and expertise born of every man. As humans, and individuals, we already have difficulties steering our lives in the right direction, making it hard to lead someone else. Only a few people can truly be leaders, and these few are not even up to a percent of the world's population. So, it seems convenient to have a leader to help the group.

Second, humans are social beings who enjoy getting together, even if some are opposed to socialization; no one can be left in a vacuum or isolation for obvious reasons. This also brings the need for centralization. As humans socialize, people's differences stand out, and as a result, they build followings for themselves. With followings comes authority, and with or without knowing, this special group of people that stands out from the majority starts exerting some level of control.

Thirdly, centralization was born from inequality and scarcity of resources. It is simply natural that everyone cannot have an equal amount of everything or anything. Some will have more, and some will have less, and the more an individual gets, the more he/she is in control of that resource.

Socialization, Resources, Leadership and Decentralization

Decentralization does not change much about the nature of centralization itself, but I believe it opens up a level playing field for all that can play on.

With decentralization, you can make yourself, in your own rights, and in your own space, a leader without having to rely on external bodies or organizations to recognize your leadership (simply create a Hive community, find yourself some followers, and you become the CEO in your own space, and possibly run your own economy).

With decentralization, you have the right and freedom to socialize in whatever way you feel is best without any form of coercion or trickery through algorithms to select a social group for you. You can simply carve yourself a social group and based on your uniqueness, become a star.

Nothing gets people more emotionally charged than money - The prospect of making or losing money. With decentralization you have the freedom to build your own economy and manage its micro and macroeconomics as much as you want.

Failure?

If you notice, I have always suggested that decentralization gives you the freedom and the platform to do things at your pace and in the way you like. Note that decentralization doesn't do things for you, instead it basically provides the avenue for you to do more yourself. So, decentralization is not failing because it is not killing off centralization, it is failing for you because you are yet to understand how it works, or you do not simply have what it takes to maximise its benefits for yourself.

A very good perspective! I think the kicker with decentralization is that it provides a system where there is an element of equality and self reliance.

We humans, in the past were more social creatures than right now. Now, we're all building our individuality trying to make a 'name for ourselves'. Decentralization system helps provide that avenue.

Exactly so friend! Thanks for reaching out.

Any time friend. You're most welcome :)

Everything starts centralised.

But the key is what happens next.

You touch on something that long has been on my mind... decentralization is fine and dandy, when it makes sense and when it works.

Seems like a lot of those on the cutting edge of this industry are decentralization maximalists to the point where they overlook that there aspects of centralized structures that are really useful... economies of scale, decision making expediency, etc.

But yes, human nature matters. Not everyone wants to be autonomously self-reliant and accountable for every decision in their lives... they just "want someone else to do it, so they can sit and watch TV."

=^..^=
