Our interest rates for savings and checking accounts are pretty low too. We do not pay fees on our accounts though. That is one saving grace. My husband and I are both old enough to have Senior accounts. No fees are the big benefit. I have been staking my CTP every day and will do the same with my Hive when I have it. I have a much better chance of earning that way.
A couple of years ago it was totally normal not to pay fees on our bank accounts as well. With the low interest rates, banks couldn't make much money anymore and they started to introduce fees. They are getting higher every year and it's an annoyance. Staking CTP, Hive, Leo and all the other tokens is such a great way to build something here. In addition we don't have to invest. We can simply build it with our work and our content.
