The governments of the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) are spending close to € 500 billion to protect their citizens from high energy prices. This means that those governments have elected to subsidize the energy so that the average European maintain their standard of living during the time of increased energy costs. These energy costs are set to increase during the winter months.

The problem may arise right after the winter. Once the reserves of gas are consumed, Europe and the UK may have a difficult time refilling them again. In the end the energy costs will always be much higher than what it was before. Even if they manage to replace natural gas with "green" energy sources, its price will remain higher, making them not competitive compared to other world players. Subsidies will end up being paid by the citizens in the form of taxes or inflation and the standard of living will end up declining regardless.

This is a good move for the people of the European Union and the UK government. Which really seems to me to be admirable and it will support people to some extent from spending high prices.
