Content Over Container - Peter McCormacks failed wardrobe case

in LeoFinance3 years ago (edited)

Hi guys, I wanted to talk about this since but I’ve had more important matters to pay attention to. A lot of people know Peter McCormack as a popular crypto-Twitter personality and big proponent of Bitcoin, he’s especially known for being a Bitcoin maximalist.

A little bit over a week ago, Peter was invited by President of El Salvador, Presidente Nayib Bukele to the Presidential palace to discuss Bitcoin.

However, Peters choice of clothing seemed to cause a ruffle among most of Crypto-Twitter as a lot of people thought he was inappropriately dressed for such meeting. Some thought it was disrespectful and he misrepresented the Bitcoin community by presenting himself to the world as a homeless person or fraudster by wearing torn pants and a faded Metallica top.

In my opinion, I see nothing wrong with how Peter dressed, I think judging people based on how they look or their clothing is toxic and a people problem as someone else noted. I understand that majority of people condemning his choice of clothing do so based on the fact that they don’t want to give the general populace a bad impression about Bitcoiners. So most would have preferred him to wear a suit and tie.

The irony of this is that people think fraudsters don’t wear suit and tie too. In fact a fraudster is more likely to wear a suit and tie to meet with a Head of State than not. These are the types of hypocritical caricatures drawn from erroneous societal dogmas we need to get rid off.

We all say fraudsters use Bitcoin doesn’t make Bitcoin a bad technology, it’s the people who use it for bad stuff that are bad. I think it’s the same here, I certainly won’t dress like this to a wedding, I don’t want to look socially awkward and I won’t be wearing a ripped pants to meet the president either, I wasn’t raised to express that level of freedom as much as I’d have loved to, it’ll make me totally uncomfortable.

But that’s just me, in Peters case, all I see is a person expressing his freedom by wearing what he’s comfortable in, which doesn’t mean he’s incompetent. The world needs to realize that it is content over container. Does Peter know his bits? Definitely! Did he deliver? Absolutely! Aren’t these what matter the most? What if he wore suit and tie and said trash to the President? Will that make Bitcoiners look better?

Maybe I’m wrong, maybe we don’t really deserve the type of freedom we clamor for, or maybe the society is right, you know, words like a picture says a thousand words matter over what actually happened in the picture, maybe we do need to conform to some certain societal constructs to please other peoples perspectives, maybe we should put the container first...

What are your thoughts?

I have never appreciated tie and jacket formality in any part of my life. I want to be comfortable anywhere and anytime with my dress code that reveals some hints about my life style and personality. It's just a waste of time to criticize any crypto guy over his/her dress code. As you mentioned, what is being discussed matters more than any other thing.

If they want, they can even discussed things without any clothes 😂

I don't think he represented the Bitcoin community. He represented himself and that's how he feels comfortable dressing. Also, it is important to note that crypto gives us this level of freedom and confidence.

With that said, if to say na me, I go wear kaftan with slippers

I totally agree

Lol I mean!!!!

This is the social construct we are talking about. Your dressing has nothing to represent with what you have to bring to the table. That’s what makes him comfortable. They should leave him alone.

Well, apparently not everybody thinks so.

I apologize to you @mistakili as I mean no disrespect, but I find this picture insulting.
I am very sensitive to people from wealthy nations visiting less wealthy nations, and assuming or appearing to assume their very presence was a gift. There is a history of wealthy nations treating the people of less wealthy countries like ignorant and backwards children unworthy of respect, and then I see this…
…this picture has a bad look.

I don’t know this man or his intentions, but I find it hard to believe that as a influencer that he was oblivious to how this looks. And this man appears to be acting like an arrogant colonizer, who doesn’t have enough respect for this man, his office and this country to wear decent clothes.

I would consider it an honor and a privilege to meet with the leader of a country. I greatly doubt, that he would be allowed to meet with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom or the President of the United States dressed like that, and I wonder if he would be so inclined to dress like that in that instance.
I apologize to you @mistakili as I mean no disrespect, but this picture looks as though he has no respect.

Edits above:
I think it’s inappropriate and disrespectful. I don’t know this guy at all, but I think his message and knowledge don’t overcome a bad first impression. Appearance matters.

He went out of his way to wear ragged clothes, and I can’t say it’s all about freedom, it looks all about him focusing on himself and being disdainful of who he was meeting. He doesn’t represent me or any other community. He represents himself and I have a right to view his dress as disrespectful and distasteful, just he has a right to represent himself in this ragged fashion.

Heyyy Shorty no need to apologize please, you’re sharing your honest opinion which also correlates with that of @vlemon’s and is highly welcomed and appreciated.

From your perspective it is clearer to me why his mode of dressing doesn’t sit well,

I am very sensitive to people from wealthy nations visiting less wealthy nations, and assuming or appearing to assume their very presence was a gift. There is a history of wealthy nations treating the people of less wealthy countries like ignorant and backwards children unworthy of respect, and then I see this…

This is actually very true

. I greatly doubt, that he would be allowed to meet with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom or the President of the United States dressed like that, and I wonder if he would be so inclined to dress like that in that instance.

I also doubt that. I didn’t think of it like this before and now I think he deserves to be cancelled, thank you for elaborating on this. 🙏🏽

He represents himself and I have a right to view his dress as disrespectful and distasteful, just he has a right to represent himself in this ragged fashion.

You certainly have a point. Lol I hear you
