Richest Brit buys “Belgian football” and more… What’s behind it?

Leonard Blavatnik, a Russian billionaire with a British passport, and according to Forbes, the richest British person alive has bought the rights for Belgian football through his streaming platform DAZN. And apparently Belgian football is not the only acquisition he has done.

Right now DAZN has the rights to Belgian, Spanish, German, Swiss, Austrian and Italian football together with rights for boxing and other martial arts. The plan this guy has is big. He wants to make DAZN (pronounced Da Zone) the Netflix of sports. A complete streaming platform for sports worldwide. A very ambitious plan, which is still in its child shoes. As a bid for the Premier League and Champions League got rejected, and let those be the biggest market shares. So he still has a lot of work to do. But with NBA and NFL rights he already has a great start to enter the market with.

Will it work?

That’s the big question. I think it will cost him a ton of money to get the rights for al the biggest sporting competitions worldwide. And that will be necessary to be the Netflix of sports. The content has to be there if you want the subscribers. And the competition is big, huge, with players like SKY, ITV and others in Britain alone.

I wish him a lot of luck, but I don’t see it happening. There are too many players for too many contracts, which makes it almost impossible to become the one with all the content AND manage to make a profit from it. Unless he asks hundreds of dollars for a monthly subscription.

    If he has the money he can do it. Sky may have the rights for the Premiership but they make more than what they pay through selling advertising space and subscriptions. Realistically there is profit to be made and hope someone like this succeeds.

    I know, but he wants all the contracts, that’s impossible without paying too much. It is a very big bet, but I am very curious!
