What a sweet gesture and a great surprise for you! I wish you lots of luck with your savings and the only advice I can give you is sometimes it might be best to wait a little longer, instead of jumping on the very first option you see. As in, make sure the boat you're buying is sturdy and worth it and won't turn out to be a money drain in the end.

I think twice about the sailboat plan, because more and more people say that the "money drain" is the cost of maintenance.

Happy New Year.

I have no idea about sailboats, but I'd imagine maintenance would be a big cost indeed. You'd have to be very careful to check the current state of the boat before buying it. And ofcourse set aside some funds for maintenance later on.

You know, maintanance costs are a thing with homes and cars and such aswell. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just something to keep in mind and do some research about. If you need the safety of knowing how much money every month costs, renting a home is a good choice, because the people you rent from are responsible for maintenance costs (atleast in my country). If you're able to set aside enough for unscheduled maintenance, buying something could be cheaper. It's just a lot of research for you to do, because obviously we can't look into your situation and your country's rules and habits.

Wishing you good luck, whatever you choose to do!
