Gold British Sovereigns

The first British Gold Coin to be minted in all branches of the Royal Mint around the world was the British Sovereign Gold Coin.

The Gold Sovereign was a fully circulating British coin until 1932.

In the obverse side of these historical gold bullion products, the sovereign leader of the British Empire is depicted, hence the term "Gold Sovereigns."

The British Sovereign's reverse side was designed in 1817 by the famous Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, depicting Saint George slaying a dragon on horseback. This design was used for each Gold Sovereign coin minted by the mint’s branches in Australia, India, Canada, and South Africa.

Among the portraits of the Gold Sovereigns were of King George III (1760-1820), King George IV (1820-1830), King William IV (1830-1837), Queen Victoria during her reign (1837-1901), King Edward VII (1902-1910) and King George V (1911-1936). There were three portrait versions of Queen Elizabeth II on the British Gold Sovereigns that were struck after 1952.

As stipulated in the Coin Act of 1816, all British Sovereign Gold Coins were 0.2354 oz (113 grains) in weight. The British Gold Coins produced during that time were also available in Half Sovereigns of 0.1177 oz.

Modern Gold Sovereigns are available also in 1.1775 oz. (Five Pound), 0.4708 oz. (Two Pounds) and 0.0588 oz. (Quarter Sovereigns released in 2009) weights. All British Gold Sovereigns are made of .9167 pure gold with 10% copper alloy.

I find having a pair of these sovereigns give a sense of not only history but a connection with my great grand parents that likely have saved and scrimped a lot to the benefit of their descendants so I wish not disappoint them and carry on their tradition.

So many different fractional gold coins are out there that are excellent @silversaver888 , but the sovereign is always close to the top, or at the top of popularity!😀

It was said that these coins were sewn in the jackets of the US paratroopers jackets in case they landed away from their units or in enemy territory, so they had money to be able to deal with the situation.

These are lovely coins :) It's amazing the detail you can have on such a small space!

My father collected coins, although he never had any of these. Mostly cool old quarters and some hay pennies in good condition. It's fun to think of the part commentative currencies have in history 😁 thanks for sharing!

I struck gold- er, really I should say silver (lol) when I was about 19. Back then I had a minimum wage job at a general store, usually working the register. I ate a lot of noodles, like ya do at that age…

One day I opened a roll of quarters and recognized a familiar sound that brought me back to my childhood- looking at dads cool coins. Sure enough, all silver! There were 4 rolls of them in my drawer! I bought them for 40$ and sold them for what I’d normally make in almost a week of work! Glad I knew, I sure needed it then 😂

Part of me now wished I’d kept them, of course. There was a few great 1956 ones, I probably got ripped off, but left happy 🤷🏻‍♀️😂!PIZZA
