The Quest For Trillions

in LeoFinance3 years ago

Things are advancing rapidly. This is something that most are aware of. However, this is a condition that was present the last 4 decades. Over that time, we see enormous advancements that, in the end, generated a tremendous amount of wealth.

In the 1980s, being a millionaire meant something. It was a level whereby one was elite. That changed as the ensuing decades passed. During that time, billionaires were very rare. It wasn't until the turn of the century that we see the massive explosion in the category.

Source

So what happened?

Many are tempted to blame inflation. That would be incorrect. In spite of the governments money printing, which is ever increasing, it has not had the impact desired. Also, we can blame wealth inequality, which certainly exists. However, that does not account for the tremendous amounts of capital that exist today.

The answer is simply advancement. Technology got to the point where it can generate so much wealth that the total pie, if you will, exploded. Again, this is not spread evenly yet that is a discussion outside the scope of this article. The important factor is that the total wealth generated exploded due to technology.

At the core of this was, of course, the Internet. Look at the Top 10 billionaire list and you will see a heavy representation of that medium. Most who broke into that category over the last couple decades came from the tech sector.

This is a trend that is not going to change.

What is going to change is the fact that this idea is only going to keep growing and spreading. We are nowhere near done with it. In fact, a strong case could be made that things are just getting started.

Today we talk in billions, tomorrow it will be trillions. On a national or global level, those numbers will reach quadrillions.

Many ask what will be the most important technology going forward? Is it quantum? Artificial Intelligence? Space colonization and exploration? While this is fuel for debate, it really does not matter. All of them are going to have an impact as well as VR, renewable energy, and robotics.

The core factor in all of this is the ability to keep increasing our computation while producing more energy. Moving closer to a virtual world means that we are going to see even more wealth generated as things keep increasing in pace.

Source

We can start with the idea of what is the Internet worth? This is a hard number to figure but we can presume it is somewhere in the $30-$50 trillion range. That is a lot for something that really did not exist 3 decades ago. If there was a "Internet token" traded, I am sure the total value would be increasing at a faster pace. The jump from 1995-2005 would be less than it was the ensuring decade.

This is how technology works. Each new generation is more powerful, of greater impact, and generates more wealth than what went before it.

As we travel through the 2020s and into the 2030s, some of the wealth generators will come into our everyday lives. Dystopian believers this will be the end of humanity, resulting in slavery for the masses. History shows us that technology has the exact opposite effect. It ends up creating more abundance than was previously experienced.

Cryptocurrency is a new model that is really going to enhance this entire concept. For now, it is operating as its own standalone technology. However, as it is integrated into other technologies such as virtual reality, space colonization, and artificial intelligence, we will see results that are orders of magnitude greater than today.

All of this will lead to greater innovation and breakthroughs.

Whereas the present Internet is worth tens of trillions of dollars, Web 3.0 will likely push towards the quadrillions. When the Internet moves from the 2D world, something that we view on a screen, to fully immersive 3D, then the value will jump exponentially. Industries that do not exist today will be worth trillions apiece.

We see this all tying into intelligence. Naturally, there is great debate about what this is and how consciousness plays in all of this. As we learn more, perhaps some of the answers will come to us. For now, we can just know that things are expanding on all levels, including our level of intelligence.

Many theorize that our entire universe is nothing more than data. Thus, evolution is a giant exercise in computation. The historic evolution of the universe all boils down to information being passed on from one generation to the next. This is seen even when we break things down to the most basic level.

Genes are a prime example. Information is passed from parent to child, containing all the previous data that was encoded. Looking at the human progression over time, we see the changes in physical makeup as compared to earlier "iterations".

The reason this concept is important is our ability to generate and pass on information is speeding up. Computer science and biology are merging. If we thought major advancement was made in informational technology over the last 40 years, we can only guess what will be uncovered over the same time frame going forward in Bio-Tech. This might be the next area of innovation that creates a multitude of trillionaires.

Many wonder how this will not result in a dystopian future?

Once again, if we look at technological advancements over the last few decades, and the impact upon society, we see areas of abundance are inclusive, not exclusive.

The digitization process makes things very accessible as well as inexpensive. Look at information, pictures, video, music, and communications. We are going to see the same trends in construction, education, food, energy, and transportation.

There was a time when one needed a specially designed device to play videos. Coupled with this was the fact that people needed to put in a physical disc that was encoded with the video. This was tied to a screen that allowed is to view the video. All of this took money.

Today, we see anyone with an entry level smart phone can access millions of hours of video for free on sites like YouTube. No longer is there much of a cost to video.

What happens when a bioreactor is the price of a microwave and one can take a stem cell from a chicken feather and create enough meat for a holiday barbeque? Right now the cost per pound of chicken might be $50 but that will come down in time. Food is going to follow the same path as video and music.

The tokenization process is going to allow us to monetize things that presently do not carry a value in that area. Certainly, they have value to society and individuals, yet it is not financially productive, especially for the person engaging in the activity.

That is changing. We are seeing innovation in this area whereby the potential exists to monetize everything someone does. In the past I used the idea of monetizing going to the bathroom. Human waste has value. For example, medical researchers need data and our excrement has a lot of that. Tokenize this along with a smart toilet and that morning bowel movement can be a money maker.

As we move further into the digital realm, coupled with AI, quantum computing, and VR, we are going to see enormous wealth generated. This is our natural path of evolution. Information is now being monetized and we continually are creating more of it.

Therefore, the idea of trillionaires, by the end of this decade, will not be a foreign concept to us. In fact, fast forward a few decades and most of us will fall into a category like this. We are rapidly moving towards an era where abundance will be so great that money is nothing more than a scorecard.

The more we automate, the greater the amount of wealth created.

Exchanging one's data (privacy) for money is a losing proposition. The reason somebody is willing to pay you for it is because it has value. Individuals are better off keeping and using that value for ourselves.

Thanks for the interesting report, @taskmaster4450. For some reason, it reminds me of a guy I, in 1976, met. He said it was his 80th birthday. He looked great, for 80, I congratulated him, and asked him what was the most impressive thing he had seen in his life. He said electricity was getting popular, but no one really had it. And that the neighborhood would gather around a wealthy family's house to watch the electric porch light come on. Times have changed exponentially.

Yeah and you saw the same thing with the telephone, television, and then color television.

I remember when the cell phone was only used by doctors, high powered attorneys, and c-level executives.

Today kids as young a 5 have them and they are a lot more advanced than the ones in the late 1980s.

@taskmaster4450 the world keeps evolving and now the world or cryptocurrencies makes it look like becoming a billionaire overnight is now easy because there are just alot or massive possibilities in our world today,we are now in an era whereby you can make x100 of your investment just within twenty hours after going to bed.....

Tokenization of many industries even makes it more interesting sir...

I wouldnt say it is easy but it can happen. We will see many crypto billionaires over the next few years. There will be projects worth trillions.

We are still on the cusp of what can be possible. I still feel Bitcoin is OLD tech though and that it's simply the entry point to better projects within the crypto currency realm. For sure though advancements are happening rapidly and companies are buying in quickly so they don't miss out. This is one of the key factors that's different from any of the rallies before. Mass adoption is happening and it's only just started as states like Florida start to transition to crypto.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Bitcoin is old technology. It is 12 years old without any serious updates. That is why as a store of value, it could work since we agree upon that. But as a technological foundation, it is not going to carry much weight.

There are much better transfer of value systems out there. People ultimately will not end up building upon Bitcoin.

Something we’ve seen for decades as well is the increasing gap between rich and poor, wealth inequality. I won’t blame technology of course because I agree with all the benefits you mentioned in your post. But I’ll blame the people instead, people are using tech to create those inequalities. And we are going to witness even bigger gaps at the same time we will witness technology improvement.
Are we going to be on the rich side or the side where people are starving to death ? There’s a high chance to be on the lucky list as we are very early adopters but nothing granted.

The fact that you posted this and it can be seen by people all over the for free shows how much things have advanced for you posting it as well those reading it.

So while income and wealth inequality have increased, but we are seeing people getting more capabilities. Thus, their abilities are increasing with each new technological advancement.

wow in 1980 I was being born I think I was not aware of what was coming.
wow hopefully wealth could be equitable distribution but hey that may never happen even in countries that were supposed to.
The good thing about the internet is that we are already here as the forerunners or perhaps not so forerunners to follow some projects that may be successful, many will fail but the fact of being in a single winner will be enough, well hopefully the wealth generated by this generation is properly distributed so that we can enjoy it since many times it cannot be, here we have the clearest example, you give us a lot of money here every day (Infinite thanks for that) so every day we generate wealth more than others but there goes the chain.
Wow, I never imagined that I could have my genetically modified chicken for dinner for an infamous value. I know that molecular food is on its way but I don't see it focused on it, so well we are on the right track I hope we can see those wonders in the style of science fiction .
Well if it is important to monetize everything, imagine the monetization of the labor economy of bees what they do for nature that leads to millions of dollars in cost to produce food that is not monetized at this time but that many economists have dared to count in hundreds of millions of dollars for the pollination process that helps us in the production of food and fruits.
Well that about the toilets would be interesting there is a lot of information there, and also gold according to someone out there.
and for now that is wasted.
Greetings.

That is changing. We are seeing innovation in this area whereby the potential exists to monetize everything someone does. In the past I used the idea of monetizing going to the bathroom. The ultimate shitcoin.

LOL yep. A true foundation upon which to build an economy. Hard to inflate it without more people, produced at a steady pace, and spread throughout the population.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

While I wouldn't necessarily call it a a solid foundation of an economy, its stock-to-flow ratio will always be steady.

I was thinking about this the other day. A million dollars used to be so much. I remember my friend had an uncle that ran a private hunting and fishing club. We got to pretty much have the run of the place during the off season, but one of the requirements was you had to have made your first million by the time you were 25 or something like that. That seemed like such a lofty goal back then. It was definitely impressive. Now... not as much. I'd still be happy to be part of that club, but it just doesn't hold the same weight.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Of course, back then, depending upon how long ago it was, we were more in an analog world. Digitization made massive amounts of money for people.

It also lowered the costs of a lot of things. Consider what taking pictures use to cost. Now, we take 3 trillion pictures a year, for virtually, free. Most of us do not spend money on even a camera.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, that is a good analogy. My dad used to have a dark room in our house, so everything about the whole process was so time consuming, costly, and intense!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

There are many examples:

Encyclopedias
Roadmaps
CDS/DVDs
Newspapers
Most everything in a smartphone use to be a separate device (GPS, cameras, filing cabinets, etc...)

And we are about to see a lot more like shopping malls going virtual.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That just makes sense to me. Where will the crazy teenagers hangout though? :)

" Information is passed from parent to child, containing all the previous data that was encoded "
sorry man, that's definitely not how genes work, you don't get all the data, you get a portion of the raw data of each parent ( in normal circumstances of course ), not accounting for mutations before or after birth and let's not even get into epigenetics because that can give people headaches.

Pretty scary and exciting at the same time. When I was growing up I wanted to be a millionaire and in my currency that is nothing now as that is what a decent car costs. Times change and why you cannot stagnate as if you stand still you are being left behind.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is very exciting if we are to embrace it. However, if we allow ourselves to get caught up with the dystopian view of things, we will live in fear and not realize how much things are improving.

This is a very insightful read with many thought-provoking lines.

Many theorize that our entire universe is nothing more than data. Thus, evolution is a giant exercise in computation.

This is one of them. I really like this way of looking at the Universe and the nature of creation itself.

This is our natural path of evolution. Information is now being monetized and we continually are creating more of it.

Very true. Besides, our ability to produce and share information is what makes us different from all other species of the animal kingdom, and the very reason why we conquered the planet despite being physically inferior to most of them. Then the internet happened and revolutionized information acessibility on a global scale, and therefore, the monetization of information was inevitable. I believe we will collectively reap the reward in the form of further advancement in the next few decades.

Technology is indeed allowing us to produce more and more wealth, and the fact that the amount of technical data produced every year is growing at a steady pace means we have a bright future ahead, if we do not self-destruct that is. We probably haven't passed the great filter yet, but the technological advancement of our age and the rate at which we are coming up with solutions to today's problems is reason enough to be optimistic.

Thanks for the interesting read.

Of course, animals have means of knowing things we do not. For example, they are well aware of what the weather will do whereby we need to look at the radar.

So it is interesting to think about how certain species are "tuned" in better than we are.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

With Bitcoin now close to 1 trillion, it really doesn't make sense to put limits on the market anymore.

The Internet was the real revolution and cryptocurrencies are a natural evolution of it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Although I agree with most of what you have written here, I do worry that the planet may have something to say about all this continual growth. There is only so much energy that it can produce and I fear that unless we live in better balance with the rest of the natural world there will be none of us around to enjoy the riches.
Don't want to be all dystopian on you but I just don't see the technological advancement needed to stop our destruction of the place we call home.

Posted using Dapplr

There is only so much energy that it can produce...

There is? Estimates are we are hit with 10,000x the energy from the sun on a daily basis as compared to what we consume.

That is just one example.

How much energy comes out of a volcano, all of it completely wasted at this time?

Certainly there are a lot of things that might be limited but it does not appear that energy is one of them. Perhaps if we only look at things from the fossil fuel perspective, you are correct. But there are many other means of energy production we are just starting to explore.

By the way, how about the energy that is generated with each step a person takes? That is a lot of power when you think about 7.5 billion people walking around.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Touche! all very true. I am really just thinking from the perspective of how the world consumes energy today by burning fossil fuels but I have heard that even to make the change to renewables would require more fossil fuels than we even have available. I just hope that we are not too late for the bright future you Envisage.

Thanks for the informative take on this entire phenomena, the people of Earth are at a crossroads, we either choose complete freedom from the current financial system and find a better more decentralized way of exchanging goods for services or we all suffer immensely from the inevitable collapse of the current monetary system.

It is great to see all these changes happening so fast. Being a millionaire is still difficult, but it is not as "impossible" as it was a few decades ago.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Deep message. I penned a message on how I should hold $1 million in investment on Hive's second layer in 10 years time and I imagine the daily turnover, how it'll be worth. Certainly crypto has so changed the narrative about finance in a short time. We are still in the beginning though.

The more we automate, the greater the amount of wealth created.

Yes, because more work gets done at a shorter time and with lesser manual energy allowing more more creative energy.

Do you consider yourself a philosopher? You sure look like one whenever I read your texts...

Anyhow, just wanted to drop the following question.

When we become a multi-planetary species, do you see this model you just described as being something that will scale, or do you see again the same leap of jump we saw from the old times compared to now, but as much large scale?
