Push Protocol - A multichain project for notifications, wallet to wallet chat, and more

in LeoFinance11 months ago

Hello, Lions! I recently heard about Push Protocol, and turns out, one of its ambassadors live close to my house. We just got him into Hive and will be sharing projects since he's a developer. It's weird that I just heard about it, I should go out there more often, because this project has been running for a while and it's well consolidated, now in the process of expansion.

Ethereum Push Notification Service (EPNS)

Push Protocol initiated as Ethereum Push Notification Service (EPNS) more about it in this article. It aimed to solve a need that other Blockchain and NFT platforms were failing to fulfill, and it is the onchain communication, the notifications, and other communication related actions able to connect or reunite in one place so the users won't miss on what is happening in the crypto world, instead of having to connect and explore each account they have for all the information, having several unread notifications in a few of them.

It initiated with communication between Dapps on Ethereum. EPNS helped create a seamless user experience when sending messages from wallet-to-wallet. It also gave control to the users on what notifications they wanted to see and which not, keeping a user focused and decentralized philosophy.

It has it's origin in a Hackaton (see this tweet) that ETH Global hosted back in 2020. The ideas was a notifications protocol for web 3 that EPNS won and with the funding started to grow. The founders are Harsh Rajat and Richa Joshi, its main location is in Asia-Pacific (APAC), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Southeast Asia. The Protocol is developed on the Ethereum Virtual Machine

EPNS changes name to Push Protocol

On September 2022, Ethereum Push Notification Service changes its name to Push Protocol. This to fit its new goal of becoming an effective multichain platform, leaving the limits of Ethereum to integrate other L1 and L2 platforms. The main part of the protocol runs on Ethereum, and the creations of channels occurs only on Ethereum, but the protocol is currently not only there but also in Polygon and BNB Chain.

Push protocol and how it works

Push Protocol is the world’s first decentralized communication & notification protocol for Web3. It allows to any smart contract or Dapp to push notifications in a gasless, feeless transaction. It also has the characteristic of being agnostic, that is a word I heard the ambassador say and I find on their site too, that means they do not look into the messages being notified, they also don't track from where to where the notifications travel.

This notifications are not globally sent, users and Dapps can create a channel and it's users subscribe to it or as many channels they want to subscribe to, and can configure which kind of notifications they want to receive. This service is gonna be attached to their wallet. The creations of channels is limited to one per wallet, and they deploy in The Ethereum Mainnet or in the Goerli Test Network. The Push Protocol ambassador mentioned that it has a cost of about $0.5 to create a channel.

Even though the channel runs on Ethereum you can select other network to send your notifications, they are working on expanding it since the goal is to be a Web3 service and not just to its main Blockchain, but for now it works on other EVM-compatible chains such as Polygon and BSC.

To communicate to the other nets you need not just your wallet but a wallet alias that will be the representation of your wallet on that other net. You can use an alias that is yours in that net or you can use the same name name of your wallet on Ethereum. That alias has to be compatible with the wallet names used on each particular chain, if set up correctly, you can use the same alias for every chain. This other Blockchains can be EVM-compatible or not.

Some information is still unclear to the current Push Protocol functioning, since the change from EPNS is recent and there is still some clean-up to do in all the documentation, especially when it comes to development.

Push UI

Push Protocol coin. $PUSH

The native currency of this Blockchain protocol is called $push, it is on Coinmarketcap ranking 788th all cryptocurrencies listed, it also as a market capitalization of $9,758,149. at the beginning of the project $PUSH got to a value of more than $6, it was around 2021. Since June 2022 it has "stabilized" under $0.4 and around $0.3, being it's current value on Coinmarketcap $0.3.

It has had a performance similar to Hive on the last two years, not at the same time but we can see a chart that looks pretty similar in shape, just off on the times. I'm not aware of the specific movements on the market that have caused those movements but, currently they have similar values being Hive higher most of the time, with the exception of some spikes on $Push.

Push vs Hive performance

It can be commercialized at Uniswap V2, KuCoin, Uniswap V3, Huobi, Gate.i0, Crypto.com Exchange, CoinEx, WazirX, MEXC, CoinDCX, Bitbns, and Jubi. The current supply is 32,584,071 PUSH aout of the maximum 100,000,000.

The Push token has a utility inside of the network, for rewards and security of the network, aiming to a circular economy. It can also be used as penalty.

The blockchain follows a Proof of Stake system. The nodes that operate correctly and fair get rewarded with $Push, while the nodes that act in harm of the blockchain and the community can be penalized, affecting the $Push they are currently staking.

Push Ecosystem

Push has an ecosystem of about one hundred Dapps, including DeFi, Services, NFTs and Metaverse, Tooling, Social, Gaming, Media, and DAO. There are also more projects being built and collaborations being created since the project has now 13 ambassadors in Latin America to talk with other Latin projects and to do onboarding of new talent to join the chain, might it be as developers, marketing, designers, and so on, all that a organizations need to keep functioning and growing.

Delegated Notifications

This concept was interesting to me, as I understand it, you can create a channel to send notifications, user can subscribe to it in a social-like activity, even the notifications are shown as a social feed. This means you can grow and audience and sort of compete for that audience with other channels, you can also use that audience as an asset, giving the possibility to other users to send notifications to your audience, treating is a another service. The notifications from delegated users will be shown as coming from the same channel so they don't go to spam. The notifications sent from a followed channel go to the inbox, the ones from non-followed channels go to the spam.

New developments in Push Protocol

Push Protocol went beyond the initial need to solve, notifications on Ethereum, to listen to the market and develop following a multi-chain approach and other communication channels. This are a wallet-to-wallet messaging protocol, which allows communications across the different networks, and most recent launch, the Wallet-to-Wallet Video Chat.

This new feature allows to do what all video communications sites do now: meetings, streaming, gaming, coaching, customer support, and so on.

The option to integrate this feature into other applications is still in progress and well also be launched soon.

To initiate you just need to join Push app with your preferred wallet and allow access to the camera. You also have to be friends with the person you want to talk before initiating a call.

It as a very fresh and intuitive UI, easy to get familiar with since it looks just like other similar sites from web2, just with more integrated functions.

Push Video-Chat UI

Another interesting data about Push, that is not a feature but a way of working, is the way they encourage participation form the community and hunt talent. They have a series of missions with rewards for doing tasks dedicated to the marketing and developing of the blockchain. This task include tutorials and content related to the platform, translation of documents to different languages, community engagement, these include meet ups, webinars, podcasts, and discussions; creative content, such as info-graphics, videos, stickers designs, etc; development and integrations, like bot creations for discord and telegram and games that use Push Protocol; research, and others.

Those missions rotate and are available for a certain time so the community can participate, and it targets different type of skills so none is left out. (it sounds familiar, doesn't it? haha, tasks and rewards is the way).

Here you can find more information about those Missions and how users can apply to it. It seems like they are open but no to all the public, you need to be approved to initiate those tasks, by sending an application before starting.

Inside of their UI I found something I didn't see while researching and it is a NFT reward system, those are given to one user each week, under the conditions that the user has done something to help the platform grow. They are called Rockstars of Push.

Push NTF rewards

I found this to be a very interesting project, and one of the ambassadors lives in my city and is actually nest to start working in a project here on Hive. I hope you find this interesting too!

The article was quite educational, in my opinion. Push Protocol was something I had never heard of. It appears to be a very helpful tool for Web3 users. The gasless and agnostic nature of Push Protocol particularly appeals to me. The fact that it is currently accessible on three separate blockchains is impressive. Thank you for sharing.

It would be great to see a similar protocol also here on Hive and have notifications and messages straight to our wallet. That could facilitate also p2p exchanges with the addition of a smart contract or some sort of escrow in between.
