Celebrating Mexico | Mexican "fiesta" weekends.

Hello #weekendexperiences friends, today I want to share with you two very special weekends that I had the pleasure of sharing with my family.

In Mexico the month of September means only one thing: FIESTA! (and earthquakes, but that's a topic for another post and another community hahaha). It is considered the patriotic month because it celebrates Independence Day (no, it's not May 5th) and celebrations are always the order of the day, that's why for two consecutive weekends I have been involved in the wonder of Mexican celebrations. In this country everything is colorful and bright, so during the national holidays the whole country dresses up in its best clothes to celebrate the greatness of Mexico.

Independence weekend

The first weekend of celebration started on September 16th, yes, I know that day was Friday, but since it was a non-working day we were able to enjoy a long weekend, - is there anything better than a three day weekend?, I don't think so! - During all that day we were preparing some delicious and very traditional meals, which we enjoyed until we were completely satiated, in fact and to be honest, I think we exaggerated with the amount we ate, but it was so delicious that we did not care. We ate Tostadas, Pambazos and to accompany a delicious rice pudding, we only missed the traditional Pozole, but that would have been too much excess hahaha.

During Friday night, with the intention of sealing the independence celebrations with a flourish, the city hall held a fireworks show, which went on until after midnight, so we kicked off Saturday in a pretty incredible way, because this was also the first time that my husband and I went out at night since our son was born (three years ago) and although we only went out to see the fireworks show we had a really good time, because to our surprise there was also a kind of Mexican music concert and there were dancers with typical costumes.

Truly, it was a very nice experience, this is a celebration that technically takes place every year in this municipality, but due to the earthquake of 2017, my pregnancy and COVID, I had never had the opportunity to witness the independence celebration in this way, so it was a very nice experience for me, and I enjoyed it a lot, despite the rain and the cold that are already beginning to be present.

On Saturday and Sunday we continued enjoying the delicious food we had prepared for the national holidays, because let me tell you that we prepared food for a regiment and here at home we are only four people (including a toddler), so practically the whole weekend was about eating tostadas, pambazos and rice pudding, you can imagine how delicious we ate those days. For me, the best part of the celebrations is always spending time with the family eating delicious food, so the Independence weekend was fantastic because we did just that.

The "Huey Atlixcáyotl" Festival

Continuing the September celebrations, last weekend, specifically on Sunday, there was a very well known festival in the municipality where I live called "Huey Atlixcáyotl", in which several delegations perform typical dances from their different regions to celebrate and represent the different ethnic groups existing in the state of Puebla. This festival is known here in Atlixco as "La Fiesta Grande" (The Big Party) and attracts a large number of tourists and of course, my family too hahaha. This is the first year that I was able to see part of the parade and the dances that characterize this event and it was something incredible, in fact it was the first one that has been organized after the pandemic, so we were all excited that it would be held again and I think that was noticeable in the amount of people who attended this edition.

That day we left home early to see part of the parade of the dancers that would gather in this edition of the festival, everything starts very early, but luckily the access road is two blocks from my house, so we did not have to go far to see them, it was amazing, I had already seen some typical dances of the region on previous occasions, but seeing so many of them at this parade was great, plus my son was also super excited because it was the first time in his life he saw something like this and we were all infected with his enthusiasm and amazement.

That day, as expected, we also celebrated with delicious food, as is the tradition of the "Huey Atlixcáyotl" festival, we decided to treat ourselves with some delicious Enchiladas, at first the idea was to go to eat at the festival site, but the day was rainy and there were too many tourists and we don't like to go out with Leo with those conditions, so we decided to cook ourselves at home. We enjoyed the enchiladas (green and mole) we prepared to the max, although to be honest we also suffered a little because the ones my sister-in-law cooked (mole enchiladas) were very spicy, delicious, but very spicy, luckily we had ice cream to pass the spicy mole.

It has been two very special weekends in which we have enjoyed a lot with our family and even though we don't go out much, we have had a great time, both with the celebrations outside the house and with the food we have prepared ourselves, because as I told you before, for us there is no celebration without good food. Now I just have to go on a diet for a few weeks to lose a little bit ALL the weight I gained during this month, although the "Day of the Dead" weekend is coming, so I don't know how long that diet will last.

I hope you also had great weekends this month and that you continue to have them in the coming months.

There ought to be a specific day just to celebrate the Mexican hats themselves😍
Nice to see all that laughter and good times.
Food and all; Total awesomeness!
Have a nice day:)))

Hahahaha It should! All the Mexican culture is amazing I am delighted to live here and witness all these interesting things.

The food, delicious, is always the best of all parties! ❤️🤣

You're very welcome:)
Yes, Mexico is a country with a strong identity 🙌😍

Uno de mis sueños, una fiesta mexicana... Gracias por mostrarla 🤗.

Qué bueno que te gustó, ojalá algún día puedas venir y disfrutar de una en esta tierra tan bella ❤️🇲🇽

Amazing food and even better with the celebration. It's September 16th. Is that the day of the famous Grito de Dolores? I finished a podcast about revolutions a while ago and the last in my trip down memory lane was the Mexican Revolution. And I can't remember the date.

But who needs dates when you have amazing food, fireworks and lots of colourful displays of joy?

Yes, that's the famous "Grito de dolores", it takes place on September 15 almost at midnight and from there begin the celebrations that end on the 16th, this year it was great because the 16th was a non-working day, so the party started from Thursday afternoon 🙈.

The Mexican revolution is celebrated on November 20, but I don't know why it is not given as much emphasis as independence 🤔

It's because it was then Father Hidalgo made the proclamation. It is similar to April 19th and July 5th around here. Both are independence days but the latter gets the cake since it's the declaration.

El Grito de Dolores is the start of the fight for Mexican independence from Spain. The revolution comes way after when the fight against The Porfiriato started.

Ha, ha, ha, ha. 4 days of party sounds like the Latin way to party.

I know the story, I just don't understand why they don't emphasize the celebration of the revolution, even the día de muertos is more important hahahaha.

These days are the beginning of the end of the diet, next month comes día de muertos and then Christmas, so let's get fat 🤣

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. That's right! Those are the truly important days of the year.

Thank you very much ❤️
