Weekend-engagement week 15: Funny or interesting

TerminalDividerLineLarge.png

I've been tasked with remembering something funny or interesting. Several things come to mind in both categories. However, the situation that occurred to me I'd label it in the category of interesting. You may think it funny until after you hear the details.

As with all first days on the job after an all morning orientation, it takes you a while to become acclimated to your surroundings. Individuals have a tendency sometimes to believe that everything told to them in training sessions will be remembered. Some information is deem important enough to make a note of.

In this instance, even if I'd taken a note of what was conveyed, I still don't think it would have changed the ultimate outcome. Why? because it was bound to be addressed sooner or later.

The time was the early 90s. I'd just been hired in a large corporation. During my group's orientation training in another of the company's buildings, I asked and was given directions to the ladies room.

Orientation finished, we were escorted to our respective departments in another building and deposited with our supervisors. I immediately inquired about the location of the ladies room and was given directions.

I opened the door and walked into restroom. The moment lifted my head, I knew this was NOT a place I've been entering all my life.

It was the Men's Restroom. And there not three feet away were urinals I'd only seen on television. Panic overtook me in that moment, and I froze. I didn't know whether someone might be coming out of one of the stalls. Even worse, I thought someone might be coming in at that moment and catch me there. It was the worse feeling I'd had in my life.

Determining no one was in there with me, I peeked out the door to see if anyone was walking by. I flew out that door so fast I almost stumbled on the carpet. I hurried down the hall and stopped. I didn't see my work station. By then I was totally confused. I didn't speak to anyone, just walked around the entire floor before I found my location. I was too embarrassed to say anything.

I sank down in my chair and placed my head on the desk. My heart pounded thinking of all the scenarios that could have happened. I didn't know these people, and they didn't know me. I imagined all sorts of whispers going on behind my back had I gotten caught. Sadly, I didn't venture to the other side of the building the rest of the day, nor did I get any meaningful work done on my first day on the job.

End of the day arrived, and my co-workers left. I hurriedly retraced my steps before the cleaning personnel arrived to see exactly how I made the mistake. I walked back through the elevator maintenance area to the other side of the floor.

There it was in plain sight. Both Men's and Women's Restrooms next to each other. According to which direction you came from, the restrooms would be located on the opposite side. I went inside the Women's Restoom. While there I heard noises next door. You could actually here people talking. I couldn't believe it. You mean the men could hear the women while they were in the restroom, and vise versa. And I could hear the toilet flush.

That did it for me. The next day and every day for the next three months, I made sure that I didn't talk while in the ladies restroom. Looking back, I realized that many of the women didn't talk either.

Several months ago, I saw a post by an author that asked if you think policy can be effectively changed internally or externally. Remembering this incident and others I've had over the years. I immediately answered "internally."

The reason is that after my incident, I wrote a letter to my company's Human Resources Dept. requesting a meeting with them to discuss an issue I wanted on record. They scheduled the meeting. I discussed the incident and my proposal to relocate the men's restroom to the other side of the floor.

You don't have to have your name on a policy change as long as the policy does change. I didn't know others had registered complaints. Within the year, the Men's Restroom was relocated.

Pretty simple thing, a few complained, you didn't complain you went with a concern and offered a solution. many work place issue remain issues simply because people do not mention it and offer a solution, thinking surely someones has said something and offered a solution.

That's true. Management could have easily said though to pay attention where you are going. But a positive change was made. It was a 20 floor building, and the change was made on each one. After that, I started hearing women say it was about time. I just smiled and agreed. Only other person I told was my hubby, and he'll take that to his grave, lol.

Opposite sex restrooms lost their mystery to me fairly early on. I grew up in farm country so starting in Jr. High when you traveled to an athletic event your locker room was the normal girls locker room.

When the girls traveled it was reversed. So they got a good look at the boys facilities, too.

Most of (all that I remember) the girls facilities had doors on the toilets and shower curtains. Seemed awful luxurious to me :)

Glad you instituted the change that needed to be.

Ladies deserve luxury.
