Deceits.

It's week one hundred and fourteen [WE114] of #weekend-engagement and the this entry is made in response to the question below.

Below is the beginning of a sentence which you need to finish. Explain what the thing is and why you answered as you did.
"I don't understand people who..."

I don't understand people who decieve others especially the voters to get elected into offices and renege on what they promised.

This has been a serious problem globally but more pronounced in the third world countries.
Politics in Nigeria is about the leaders and themselves alone. The way they transact the trade of deceit deserves a lot of study before one could understand the motives.

Once it is election year, you see politicians promising heaven on earth. They will move to communities without schools and promise them schools. They move to low earners community and promise them economic fortune. They promise to take the out of school children from the street and enrol them in school. They promise to make the people secured and safe.

All of these promises mean nothing to them. After ending the campaign on these notes, they go ahead to buy votes on the day of election. In order to keep people at their mercy in this form, they do nothing to improve the situation and after four years, the cycle continue. By the time they win the election after buying votes, the next is how to recoup their illicit investment and by so doing development is relegated to the back sit.

When I was growing up, I have been hearing of the same complaints that politicians are not ready to develop the country and presently if I want to write about my experiences, time and space won't allow me. It keeps repeating itself every four years. If you see the results of these actions in Africa and Nigeria to be specific, you would not agree that there is government.

People are hungry and more productive youth population are being pushed into crime because of either lack of access to education and/or unemployment after being educated. The insecurity in Nigeria presently is as a result of decades of neglect by the leaders. They siphon tax payers money in billions. Some items keeps appearing on the budget every year. The legislature that are supposed to assume an oversight function have their prices too. If you notice any exposed financial infidelity and take the culprit to court (the third arm of our democratic government), the judge has his price too. The whole process is abused.

Presently, millions of school age children are out of school especially in the Northern part.

The leaders don't care. If you look into the people's eyes, all you would see is frustration and sufferings. The gap between the rich and the poor is very wide and getting wider. The children of the leaders are schooling in good private schools in the country or standard schools in foreign land while those of the poor are at home presently as a result of industrial action by University teachers due to neglect by government. The strike is running into the seventh month now.

In the last four elections, they have been promising to fix educational sector.
Few years ago when terrorism and banditry activities were on the increase, politicians hinged to it to promise safe and secured environment for the populace if they get voted into power. The ruling party was defeated and the government in power now took over but the security situation got worse. Bandits stopped many from going to farm and food sufficiency became a mirage.

Hundreds of Nigerians are in captivity in various locations across the country.

This is in addition to people being killed in large numbers and security personnel like Military, Police paying the supreme price. The politicians are the ones that can travel safely through the air. The poor are left at the mercy of criminals while traveling through the land. They promised four years ago to solve these challenges.

Another point of deciets for them is economy. More than 70% of the population are living below the poverty line - in fact majority live on less than one dollar per day. The politicians take undue advantage and promise to make life better for the people. During campaign, no community is too far to be visited but after winning election, those places are neglected till another election period. No jobs for the people.

If the people complain, they will infiltrate them and set a group against another. They frustrate unity of the led because it can pose threat to their interests.
Next year is the year of general elections in Nigeria and they are out again promising what they know they will never do. I sit and watch them on television more frequent than any recent time presently. The same promises I heard 12 years ago, 8 years ago and 4 years ago are being made by the contestants for next year elections.

I don't understand people that do these to their fellow countrymen and women. I don't really understand.
