The pier - El muelle

Some of the memories of my beginnings as a sport fisherman are the fishing piers, some people call them fishing breakwaters, I do not know if it is a correct use of the word but that is how they are known and I am not the one to say otherwise.

As a child, when my grandmother took us to the beaches of Punta Lara in the summer, she used to look with awe and reverence at those enormous (at that time they seemed large) structures that penetrated the river many meters. I used to fantasize that they would go as far as the depths of the bed surely housed the big fish, to which I did not have access and had to settle for the small mojarras on the coast. Those mojarras that I carried in a bag and forced my grandmother to fry and then eat them with passion, of course it was another time when the river was not polluted as it is now.

I dreamed of fishing from those piers, in my childhood fantasy I was sure that there I would get huge fish that I would proudly show my parents. Over time I grew up and finally I accessed those supposedly magical places.

They actually have magic but they do not claim to fish, much less big fish of those that hide the depths of watercourses. I have fished well, regularly and badly from those structures, a dock does not ensure good fishing, I learned it over time. However, as I said, they have magic. The magic of camaraderie between strangers, that of accompanied solitude, that of silent friendship.

It is common on a fishing pier for a stranger to approach with a half-world to help another to lift a fish, selflessly. It is normal for someone you do not know to approach you to ask how the fishing is going, if there is a bite, what bait you are using or just to talk about the weather.

I remember when with my friends from school, with whom later we were inseparable and even today after many years we continue to see each other and share our lives, we went fishing in the sports city of Boca Juniors, it was a pharaonic endeavor that never ended but in those Years allowed us to enjoy a phenomenal fishing pier.

When it was my turn to do military service, my two friends continued to go and on a glorious journey one of them obtained a huge specimen of silverside that he kept for almost two months in the freezer of the refrigerator until I was able to leave the barracks on my first day. permission, just for you to see.

The docks have a peculiarity that is not frequent in other areas of fishing, they are firm and high, a person can stare at the buoys as hypnotized, for a long time, waiting for one of them to move or sink giving an unequivocal signal that a fish is prowling around and is about to eat the deception. Another friend who was very good at writing wrote: "that moment is a moment when nothing exists, only that" referring to that situation.

I recently took one of those childhood friends to fish off a pier, it is his only chance to do something he likes as an ugly and bloody disease has greatly reduced his mobility.

Just walking up to the headland and seeing the well-known silhouette of the fishing jetty revived in my memories kept in the deepest recesses of memory. We spent a beautiful day, the sun from time to time hid behind some clouds, only to come back stronger; we observe fishermen in kayak, sailboats and boats in the distance. One day of the best and my friend for a while forgot his health problems.

The prodigious colors of the late afternoon highlighted the images of the river, the beach and of course the pier that says goodbye to me with another postcard that will go on to add to the long list of portraits and beautiful memories of my life.
