Hi @iyimoga, wow, the narrator took a wild risk! I had to wonder what I would do in the same situation, but it's hard to imagine. You have a clever story line here. As my colleague who posted as The Ink Well indicated, the narrator comes to the conclusion that if he had traded places with the other person, he would have died instead. But that is just one possibility. It could be faith and conviction that decides who receives wealth. Or strength of character. Or possibly there is some algorithm within the rock that determines the fate — for example, it could be the person who first touches the stone in a month in which a full moon occurs twice. (In other words, "once in a blue moon.") Ha ha. Just a thought.
