The passenger

The road is dark because a torrential downpour has transformed the sky into a large black slate, decorated with rays of light caused by lightning.

He has had to travel from his city to another because a labor emergency urges him to dawn in this one.

His car's windshield wipers sometimes become insufficient to clean so much water that they cover the fogged-up glass.

An old romantic rock song on your radio tries to counterbalance the storm.

He's tense because his speed is very slow, so he thinks.

"If this storm doesn't pass quickly, I'll be late."

Suddenly a figure emerges from the darkness, covered with a raincoat to shelter from the thick drops that flood everything.

He thinks it's a woman standing by the side of the road.

He stops his car and lowers the windshield of the passenger's door a little.

-Can I help you?

Just as he thought, she's a lady in her thirties.

-I'm going to the village.

-Get in the car, I'll take you.

More than a gesture of charity for her, it's for him, because now he won't be traveling alone.

She places herself in the passenger seat.

-Does he live around here? -He asks her.

-Yes.

-Why so late on the way? Does transportation pass through here?

He looks at her sideways because he can't take his eyes off the road.

She has blond hair and green eyes.

He can't detail his figure because he's wrapped in that raincoat that looks like a blanket.

-No, but someone always takes me.

So she's a customary passenger on the road.

In a few minutes the rain goes down and the conversation becomes more fluid.

Among many things, she tells him that she lives on a farm and that she likes to travel at night.

A few kilometres before arriving at her destination she asks him to leave her and so he does.

He says goodbye to her and asks her.

-Aren't you afraid to travel at night?

She smiles and answers him.

-When I was alive, yes.

He is struck by the answer and the fact that, as in a magic act, she disappears.

He sweats and starts the car as if he were taking part in a dragster race.

Upon arriving in the village, one of the villagers confirms to her that the young woman was a ghost, who had been run over by a vehicle while waiting to go to the village ten years ago.

Ha ha. Exactly!

Thank you for writing this ghost tale for the Ink Well community. Figures on the road at night always give us pause for thought. This is a well-conjured scene.

We appreciate your interaction with other members of the community.

I had a bad feeling about that figure in the dark and the rain! I'm so glad she only rode along with him and then left, instead of causing him any harm. Great story, @joseph1956.
