Leaning against the trees after a generous walk in the park was the ultimate for Jayb. You could feel, breathe, and devour the aromatic scent of spring in the air. Jayb adored this season. Although he spent his last decade on Earth waiting to be deployed on another mission, he could never get tired of nature’s awakening manifesto after a snowy winter.
While gazing into the abyss, his ears began to buzz suddenly.
“Avion calling, Captain. Your departure is set for tomorrow at 7 AM your local time. Destroy all evidence. End of transmission.”

“When are you coming back? Why aren’t you packing your stuff?
“Enjoy the entire house while I’m gone. And invite Emily over someday; she really likes you.”
“You think?”
“I’ve spent hundreds of hours teaching you how to read and interpret energy, and nothing seems to stick.”
“You’re the only friend I have, Jayb, and you’ve never given up on me despite being an outcast. Why?”
“Weirdos flock together and stick together, right?”
Jaby left the living room and headed toward the kitchen when Mike jumped in front of him, eager to get an answer to his first question.
“Honestly, though, when are you coming back?”
Jayb smiled and whispered softly: “You won’t even remember I was gone.”

Emily removed the freshly baked apple pie from the oven and placed the pan on a cutting board to allow the delicacy to cool down. Her grandchildren were playing in the backyard, showing off to their parents, while Mike sat quietly in his wheelchair, staring at the cellar door. He would spend several hours daily closely watching the cellar door and hoping for his friend to return.
Fifty years have passed since he last saw Jayb walk down the cellar stairs. Jayb used to organize parties in the cellar and invite his former uni colleagues. Mike was always there with Jayb, helping him throw the party and remove the nasty white mushrooms glued to the staircase before every event.
As he reflected on Jayb missing his wedding, the birth of his children, and his grandchildren, tears welled up in his eyes.
“Mike, come on in. I’ve made your favorite apple pie, darling.”
Emily approached Mike and sighed.
“Darling, please stop suffering. I’m sure Jayb is fine.”
“Do you think he’ll attend my funeral?”
“I don’t like it when you talk like that. Let’s get you a nice slice of pie. I’m sure you’ll love it.”
💎💎💎
“Jayb? Is it really you?”
“You still can’t read my energy field, can you, buddy?” Jayb laughed out loud.
“You came back!”
“I never left. You just couldn’t feel me because of all the pain and suffering you were carrying in your heart.”
“Did I die? Am I in heaven?”
“Neither, nor. Look around. Do you see those white mushrooms on the stairs? You gotta clean this place cause we have a party coming up in a few hours. I invited Emily, too.”
“What are you talking about? I’m in a wheelchair; I can barely move. It’s been fifty years since you left.”
“Last night, you finally applied the most important piece I taught you. You let go of the past. Now I can level up my teachings. Come on. We don’t have all day. Our guests will be arriving soon, and I still need to find a good DJ. The last one was a disaster.”
Mike looked down his legs and noticed he could move. He jumped up the stairs and rushed outside the cellar, touching his face and noticing his wrinkles were gone.
Jaybs’ words flooded his conscious mind as he stopped and mumbled:
“You won’t even remember I was gone.”
