Dreams and a Burnt out Restaurant.

in The Ink Well4 years ago (edited)

I'm sure you know the feeling. That dream which was so vivid and felt so significant, slipping away as the tendrils of your mind try to cling onto the memory of it. Yet it gets further and further out of reach, the more awake you get. There was a time when this frustrated me, but now I know better. We aren't supposed to remember them; those glimpses of the other planes.

Ever had déjà vu? That's because you already experienced it, in that dream you couldn't remember. Time is only linier in our physical plane of existence, but when you detach from your mortal body, you're free to see so much more than your mortal brain can comprehend. That's why you need to forget it. Even those of us who are starting to remember what's on the other planes can only remember parts of it. What happens if we manage to remember it all, remains to be seen.

I’m what you might call a seer. It's not as great as you might think it would be. Yes, I can see events in my dreams before they happen, but it doesn't mean I can do anything about it. Sometimes what I see is an event that's already happened, but unless they're wearing really old fashioned clothing, I can't tell when it happened, but when I touch a place I can see all timelines around it, if I want to.

There are others like me, but different. They see useful things. They can see and sometimes interact with the other planes in real time. Apparently infants are better able to see the dimensions that we lose sight of as we grow. Ever seen a baby reaching for something that wasn't there, or giggling like something's entertaining them that you don't see? It sure is spooky! Apparently they're seeing a dimension we can't… well at least most of us can't. There are some adults who can still see it, though. Clairvoyants and the like. Not those fake ones, the genuine ones.

There is a guy who’s taken it a step further, though. He doesn't just talk to the spirits, he can bloomin' walk among them! Ever wanted the power of invisibility? That's him. He’ll walk among the spirits, but can still see the physical and interact, but we can't see him! He got stuck there the first time he went and stayed invisible for over a year…

Lambert raised an eyebrow at the investigator.

“Humour her,” he chuckled, grinning from ear to ear.

Lambert sighed and turned to back the ‘seer’ who was now staring intently out of the gaping blackened hole, that was once the window, at the shop across the way.

“So what do you see?” she asked.

Lucy seemed to pull herself back from a daze, she looked at Lambert for a moment then back at the shop, before flippantly repling, “A pair of cute kitten heels.”

She looked back around the scorched restaurant, paused for a moment watching the kitchen door, then walked over, putting her hand out as if to feel the now missing door as she stepped through the doorway. Confused, Lambert followed to find her looking at the blackened hob. She looked up at Lambert and the inspector as they walked in.

“The back burner under the oil didn't get shut off. Your chef was distracted, but it wasn't intentional. Anything else?” she asked abruptly.

“That’s all we needed, thank you Lucy.” The inspector replied.

“Meet you back at the car then.” She said as she left swiftly.

“I thought she didn't know anything about the investigation.” Lambert said pointedly to the inspector.

“She doesn't.” came the retort, “That's the point. Looks like you're in the clear. You should hear back from the insurance company soon.”

The inspector spun on his heel and promptly left. Lambert wandered out of the kitchen in a daze and found herself at the front window watching Lucy peering through the glass of the clothing boutique. Then the inspector’s car pulled up, Lucy got in and they left.

Just try to get some ideas out my head and onto paper, so to speak. I'd really welcome any feedback, please don't be afraid to be critical. It's a work in progress and names might change, if it goes anywhere.

Great story!I really like it from "Lambert raised an eyebrow at the investigator"...

The intro bit was good for context, but its needed something more to it....like where it was set..

I was thinking more like this has some fantastic possibility of a blade runner style movie -- like set in the future where just a very small set of people evolve a little and people have much stronger intuition over psychic today.

Then the picture could be like a flying car or something...haha sorry overactive imagination.

No such thing as an overactive imagination! 😉 Thank you for the feedback. Agreed, it certainly needs something more, but I can't quite seem to find it just yet...
