1998-11-25 - Wednesday - Fox Kids Take Over

in ARTS3 years ago (edited)

I wrote this 11-page essay when I was 13 years old, it includes drawings of two villains I created. Well, both characters were used in the two Power Rangers movies we filmed as kids. The first bad guy, Lot, was in the first film in 1996. The second bad guy, Loxxcatt, was in the second film in 1997.

The deadline for this contest might have been Sunday, the first day of November of 1998 or that was at least the deadline they had for 1997. It looks like my entry was never actually submitted to the actual contest. There may have been other drawing contests or other kinds of contests I did enter. If so, I probably wouldn't have any copies of that as we didn't really have any scanners at that time and people generally don't send the stuff back via the snail-mail. They generally would say you wouldn't receive your entries back in the mail.

Fox Kids Take Over '98

The name of this particular contest or sweepstakes was called the Fox Kids Take Over '98. I think the date for this event was 1998-11-25 - Wednesday. What does that mean? Well, it looks like kids sent their letters listing their favorite television shows to Fox Kids. On the 25th day of November of 1998, it looks like they played the top shows based on the lists the kids sent. So, in other words, we all voted for our favorite shows.

Bad Guys Contest

It looks like I was going to enter that Take Over contest. In other words, this particular contest was not a design some new monsters for Saban's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers contest. Hell, it wasn't even a drawing contest. And I think I remember knowing that. We had design a monster contest in previous years or at least one time I remember seeing something maybe back in 1994 or most likely in 1995 at Tiffany Cumbo's house when we were all watching TV as kids.

Combination Contest

So, my thinking, my logic at that time, was I was going to not just give them a list of my favorite shows but also give them not one but two ideas for villains they should introduce for the Power Rangers. Well, I think I entered the design a monster contest in the past but it must have been that I just wanted to do it again at that time.

Not Just a Monster

But I wasn't just designing a monster of the day kind of thing but two main characters that could replace the other main antagonists which originally was none other than Rita and Lord Zedd. Oh, I also gave them executive producers a check-off list so they can let me know which of my ideas they want to do or not do.

Around this time, in October of 1998, I was also designing my own play money. 1998-10-15 - Thursday - Joey Money.

This is the check-off list I gave the Fox Kids executive producers so they could let me know which of my ideas they would or would not consider.

A drawing of my cat, Puffer, who played the main bad guy named Loxxcatt.

I first came up with Loxxcatt at least by 1997.

Here is a drawing of the main villain named Loxxcatt.

He was inspired by my cat name Puffer.

Actually, Puffer was in the first Power Rangers movie we made in 1996.

I actually filmed Puffer the second Power Rangers film in 1997.

So, in other words, Puffer was playing that character, Loxxcatt.

I didn't finish that second movie but I was at least able to put to video my idea for this main bad guy.

Lot was the name of the main villain in our first Power Rangers parody movie in 1996.

I first came up with the idea of Lot around the summer of 1995 or at least before the filming of that first film in February of 1996 which was several days before my 11th birthday.

Lot battled Zordon years ago.

I grew up in Forest Grove, Oregon.

We would get Fox via channel number 13 or number 49. I think channel 13 was a VHF signal channel and 49 was possible more a UHF signal type channel. I could be wrong but my memory says the smaller numbers were VHF and my memory also says those were the two main types of signals we would pick up for television stations and channels and networks and such. The signal was analog. This was before there was digital TV stations running through the air everywhere.

Fox Kids Take Over '98 was a contest held by Fox Kids in 1998. Children could vote for their favorite shows and the show that won was played during the entire Fox Kids block.

Wow, good thing you saved all those, I got flashbacks to those shows as I was reading it. I liked Home Improvement, the Fresh Prince, and World's Funniest Home Videos, too. Can't believe Simpsons is the only one still running. Also liked Full House, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Alf, and so many more! My answer is I check some of the above! haha

Haha and yeah. But oddly enough, the contest probably only wanted you to pick your favorite kids show that Fox Kids were allowed to show. I'm not totally sure if my list of shows were too all over the place. But then again, I think I was trying my best to only list Fox related shows on that list minus maybe a few.

Another fun show that was on in the early 1990s was Dinosaurs, that was on ABC and not Fox, it might have been on at 08:00 PM on Friday or I forget, it was a sitcom like show starring a family of dinosaurs including the baby who would say "Not the momma" to the dad and hit him with a frying pan.

OMG I have a faint memory of watching that one too. The dinosaurs destroyed their world and created the ice because they didn't take care of the planet and let greed and profits come first. A lot of parallels to our world now.

That snow episode, "Changing Nature," of Dinosaurs was episode 7 of season 4 which aired on Wednesday, the 20th of July of 1994, according to Wikipedia. I was 9 years old and I watched it. Kind of sad in a way as they felt like they were going extinct.

I assumed that was the last episode but it turns out, according to Wikipedia, to my surprise, there appears to be 7 more episodes after that. Oh, I see now that this second half of that last season were not new episodes but unreleased older episodes. So, never mind, episode 7 was technically the last episode of the series. They say they wanted the show to be educational and that is why they ended it with an analogy to scare us with global warming or global freezing of the 1970s or climate change. Imagine AOC saying the world is going to end in 12 years back in the 70's.

The first season was mostly on Friday nights I think. Some of the later seasons, it was on Sundays. And I think it went back and forth between these different days on ABC which was channel 2 in Oregon. I think it was normally on at 08:00 PM. I think for most seasons or for most of the episodes, it would air on Wednesdays. But I don't know if they also aired reruns on other days as well. I have memories of watching Dinosaurs on Fridays and Sundays. And maybe sometimes on Wednesday but I am not totally sure about that.

One of the problems is that I was usually off at a children's Bible club, AWANA, on Wednesday nights. But when we got home, I would sometimes watch Star Trek Voyager which I think was on at 09:00 PM. Well, the schedule for that probably changed a few times in the 1990s and I would also watch Nowhere Man too. And there were probably other shows too. Wait, scratch that. Voyager didn't premiere until 1995. So, that means Voyager and Dinosaurs did not overlap.
