The Big Blue Building

I was wrong about the history of the big blue building in Sugar House. This building started as an outlet store for Deseret Industries. Deseret Industries is a chain of thrift stores owned by the LDS Church.

The term "deseret" appeared in the Book of Mormon. Some say it means honeybees. Apparently, Brigham Young had an ambition of establishing an country in the Western United States which some referred to as the Empire of Deseret. The country ran from the Continental divide to San Diego.

The army marched into the Salt Lake Valley and squashed imperial ambitions. The next hope was to establish a state that ran from the Continental divide, included half of Colorado, Southern Idaho and Nevada. I believed they hoped to get the west side of California.

But lets get back to the building.

Deseret Industries built a huge facility on 2100 South. I think they sold this building to Salt Lake City. My understanding is that SLC wanted to turn it into a homeless shelter.

Residents balked and it was then rented to a bike shop.

The building was turned into a winter overflow facility in January 2020. My guess is that the windows were broken after that episode. It was probably someone voting against the homeless shelter with bricks. My understanding is that a private developer has acquired the lot and it is destined to become an apartment complex.

The picture picture below shows the main entrance to the store. I took a half dozen photos of the new Deseret Industries Complex in Sugarhouse. It is huge.

As for the footer of this article: I decided to end with a picture of a discarded slipper that was on the premises. The other slipper was sitting near by.

I forgot to point out the little #hive in the company's logo.
