The Power of Recycling: Scavengers roll in Waste Management in Nigeria

in Centlast year

Hello Cent platform!

The introduction of recycling the world over has brought a new phase in waste management. The separation of wastes into different compartments makes it better for those in the landfills to know the areas to dispose the waste.

In the current dispensation, disposing waste in the landfills isn't the solution to waste management but recycling is.

With recycling in place, most families now know the importance of separating their waste before disposing then. For instance, prior to the recycling era, most families join all their wastes together whether metal, plastic or aluminum. Today the case is different, no family wants to lose the little money they could get from their solid wastes.

For us here in Nigeria, recycling has made scavenging a big business for both old and young. The number of jobless people that are engaging in scavenging have increased greatly over the past 5 years, making it another safe haven for poverty alleviation. I'm not neglecting the fact that many in my country are still wallowing in abject poverty, but those that have taken scavenging as a passive income stream, are putting on their table on a daily basis.

It's so obvious that most scavengers make at least $2 per day, which indicates that they've moved from the poverty line as place by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. This on its own is making scavenging business a big deal in Nigeria.

Scavenging and the income people earn from it have reduced stealing activities to some extent, although, due to the nature of items scavengers are in search of, most tend to unlawfully trespass into people's property in their absence to steal some items kept in the compound.

Be that as it may, scavenging has greatly helped in waste management in Nigeria and with the demands of metals, plastics and aluminum by industries, scavenging might become the hope of many in the nearest future when you consider the dwindling nature of the Nigerian economy.
