Sealed Power of The Force Playsets (Toy Review)

in Toys on Hivelast year

I was hoping that this post would be a bit different. I think this is the first time I'll complain about having sealed Star Wars figures or sets.

My sister and her boyfriend bought me these two playsets last Christmas, and I was delighted about them - they bought them from the shop I mentioned in my last post about the MLC-3.

Here are the Death Star Escape and the Detention Block Rescue.

I could have sworn that one side of each of the boxes were open, to be able to take them out and set them up, which I hadn't had a chance to do since receiving them.

Wouldn't you know it, they are in fact, both sealed. Much to my disappointment, although the feelings of disappointment of this revelation are also coupled with a feeling of joy.

I scrutinised the seals and corners of these boxes for any sign of a tear, where old tape may have been peeled off, but there are no signs of damage in that regard.

Here's the flip side, and much like the other side, there are no tears or damage to speak of.

The back of this Death Star Escape shows that it comes with a removable bridge that can be used for Darth Vader and Obi-Wan to have their duel.

Also, below it shows the Detention Block Rescue set, I've looked them up, and sure enough of this particular line of products I think these are the only two playsets produced.

Of this Hasbro/ Kenner re-release, I always liked the colour used on the box, also, a way of dating any of this new line is by the colour. The red box art of the figures, vehicles, and playsets was used from the 1995 - 1997, and then in 1997, they swapped the red colour for a green one. Then after 1999, this was changed again for the branding of The Phantom Menace release.

I found a date at the bottom of each box saying that they were produced in 1996, so these two sets are about 27 years old, considering they are nearly three decades old, the boxes are in great condition, as would the contents be.

The only real damage to this box is here, where an old price tag used to be. This is pretty common.

This box is a little bit faded, another commonality with some of these old figures and sets. But, there is no damage, other than another common bit of ware, I.E the scuffs around the edging.

It looks like a really cool set, and in a way, I'm raging that they're sealed, I would have loved to open them up and check them out.

If you had these would you open them, or keep them sealed?

Here you can see the three seals and the bit of scuffing around the edges.

I have to say, while I was inspecting these for any sign that they had been opened previously and resealed, I considered gently cutting the tape to open them up.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it. I was trying to find a price range for how much each of these are worth; I found some varying prices, and they seem to go for about 25-100 pounds.

Star Wars figures, ships, and vehicles can go for crazy money. My main focus are the vintage stuff, but these two are welcome additions to the collection.

I had hoped to set them up as dioramas on the shelf, but I suppose they'll just have to be up there boxed.

I have a ton of stuff, but at the moment my main goal is to collect all original 77 loose figures, and then maybe aim for the final 17, which even loose go for insane money considering their rarity.

Of the original 77 I have about 56, so I'm getting there. They'll make one hell of a display once the set is complete.

Awesome Star Wars set!

If you had these would you open them, or keep them sealed?

As a kid, I don't think I would've had enough self control not to open them and have my own space-faring battles in the living room. Now that I'm older I would probably open them too because I still lack self control. :)

Excellent article!

Thanks man! It took a lot of self control not to open them up, haha one day I might though.

That's what I was thinking; I was surprised to see them still sealed, I would have figured someone over the last 27 years would have, but there are absolutely no signs of the seals being broken.

I've not seen those before. Could you find some that have been opened as those should be cheaper. I would find it frustrating that I could not get them out without affecting the value.

I'm not sure how much of the value would be affected by opening them, but I think it's better off leaving them in the box for the time being.

Yeah I was thinking of having a look around for some already unboxed ones that I could maybe pick up. I was looking forward to checking them out.

oh damn boxed, how much?

It says online that they're are worth between 25 - 100 pound each, although, I don't know if I'll sell them.

These figures always make me laugh, because it looks like they took steroids hahaha. It's a very nice set, and the best part is that you can still find them at a great price.

Hahaha yeah, some of the figures in the 90s Hasbro line are a bit naff looking. There's a nickname for Darth Vader amongst collectors, I think they call him Hench Vader. One thing I will say though is that the aliens in this line look sick. The gamorean guards in particular.
