Carved pumpkin for halloween

in Sketchbook2 years ago

In honour of halloween i thought id draw a carved pumpkin. The tradition originated in the UK #teamuk, where they would carve faces into turnips of demons and devils. Candles were placed inside the hollowed vegtable and the glowing faces were reminders of death. These turnips were called ‘punkies’ and ‘Jack o’Lanterns’ and were named after ghostly lights rumoured to be seen in marshes and bogs that were believed to be the spirits of the dead.

This is the first time ive tried drawing in this style and used it to practice my shading techniques. Still got a long way to go but quite impressed with how it turned out.

Below is some progress shots from the drawing process

First i made a rough sketch of how i wanted the pumpkin to be. I tried to make it not too simple of a shape.

I then blocked out the base colours that i wanted.

Added in shading for the main body of the pumpkin. It is at this stage of me writing that i realised i covered the nose and forgot to add it back in.

Then finally i added a shadow and a background. I hadnt put much thought into the background but didnt look right on a white background so just made it sitting under a starry night sky.
