A TWIST in my Art

And now for some good news for myself...

I was hired to make a game cover that's a variation of the Twister Game, for educative purposes. This is one of the first few times I've been hired to do illustrations, which is absolutely awesome because I can finally stay awoke all night for two nights in a row - btw, I DID to finish on time - and feeling absolutely blissed out instead of a decaying pile of hot compost - which supposedly cooks out it three weeks - but I failed the only time I've tried LOL.

I kicked myself out of the comfort zone and studied a bit of proportion, perspective, composition, and anatomy last week, watched some youtube videos and it helped a ton. In the past I was too lazy, thought it was too hard, or gave up without trying, just kept on doing what I knew how to do. I have biiig FOMO (fear of missing out) which translates to anxiety because I haven't been earning enough, so I try to post up but can't because I'm busy working, basically rushing all the time. I've been wanting to study and practice for forever though. Maybe that's what I've been needing to do to get seen.. or maybe people just don't like doodles too much.

What do you think?.. (Please leave a comment below)

The Illustration Process

For now I will not be able to publish the full illustration just yet because I have to wait for the release date of the game, but I have some sneak peaks at the end of the post, and all the sketches I made.

The following was the first sketch, and as you can see, it's a very rough one. I was going for only thumbs at first, as I've see people recommending it.

I was pretty indecisive at first about the idea, about the poses, about the composition, but I knew I wanted something with perspective, like the hand coming towards the viewpoint, but I actually hadn't done this enough.

I tried throwing some animals in there, but I think that my mind was only trying to cover up the things I usually don't draw: humans, specially well drawn ones.

13.JPG

I thought about using doodle animal faces with human bodies to avoid drawing the faces. I've drawn them before but with a lot of difficulty. I didn't know if I could achieve what I was looking to do.

Drawing Large and Experimenting Wide

As I progressed, I started making the sketches larger. I needed more detail to see what I was doing a with more clarity. I tried experimenting with a top plane, which was something a little different. The ugly face here was part lack of trying to do it well, and also rushing. At this point I started looking at videos and references to get things into better shape.

15.JPG

At this point I feel things got a little clearer, except for the faces.. I was still trying to hide their faces. I like how this one turned out though.. It gives it a bit of a mysterious or eerie feeling to not see the faces.

As you can see in the image below, I started to use the whole page because I wanted more detail. Hands look a little alienish and out of shape.

Next I gave up on the ink and welcomed the eraser. I remember I started studying proportions of young folks and other drawing tips before I made this one. I also stopped rushing so I could work on things in a good way.

I can't deny I was influenced a lot by the original cover of the Twister game.. I pictured that the artist of this cover must've gone through some process to choose this angle and composition.

Orignal Twister Game Box

This was my final attempt at trying to run away from the human form.

17.JPG

I liked that this last one is a lower-than-ant perspective. At this point I was working the human form a little more, and things started to take shape. Even though I didn't choose to use this sketch or perspective in the final illustration, I really like the underground point of view. It can really change a lot in the story. In the end I mixed some of this to create the final sketch, but I will leave that for the game illustration post when it is time.

- Bonus Catso !

Last but not least, here's a nice disproportionate cat I sketched out of my mind without reference. In conclusion, though, after watching a video of artists being asked what were the most common mistakes artists make, many emphasized the importance of reference, composition, structure and also not rushing. I could really note my improvement once I started the in-depth study, and this was only for a week. (please ignore the disproportionate runner there haha)

And now for the Sneak Peak ( Rolling snare drums - - - )

I decided on digital painting. It really took me some time to get the hang of my new Huion HS611 tablet and also getting back on digital painting (I've been a little rusty), but it was a great experience.

Even though I made some mistakes in proportion, I could spot them more easily, and it was easier to make some parts, even though I mostly worked without reference, because I didn't know how to look for it - and because I was also rushing because of the deadline.

I understand now, I must gain knowledge to be able to swift through in a smooth way. It was a lot of work to correct mistakes though. I'm pretty excited to continue and learn more.

I have come this far without the study for years mostly only doodling. I actually did study human anatomy and composition when I studied graphic design in the university. I wasn't as interested and intrigued about learning as I am today, though.

Final Advice

I've broken myself out of my comfort zone now and I do realize the importance of all these things now.

My advice for any startin' artists or any other artists ignoring these topics is, face your fear, laziness or anything that's stopping you, I suggest you break your limits with full strength. It's not as hard as it seems - even though I suspect I've got better at picturing the position of masses in space by simply drawing a lot of geometry and doodles in my sketchbook.

I've drawn quite a lot of creatures out of my imagination, and practice helps, but I think that if you really want to make it far and take your work to another level, studies should be carried out. It's totally worth it and you can see it in the cover of this post in one of the things I've always been afraid of because "it's too hard": drawing hands. I'm really proud of this final image and having taken the leap of faith to improve my artwork.

Now go on jump and TWIST!

I'll post the full illustration soon..

It's my dream to be a full time cryptoartist , but you know.. good things take time to cook. For now I gotta work to stay alive and pay the bills, sharpen my skills and learn some new ones so that my art gains traction and I get noticed more.

Running Late

The post for the last animation I did made .37 HIVE which is disappointing, because I put a lot of effort on it, about a week of work. It kinda sucks that it takes so much effort to get something going in here.. I probably have to post more often, but then I wouldn't be able to make the kind of works I'm making, which is a bind. Anyways, that's the way it is, so enough rant already.

The tokenized piece is an MP4 loop with sound

The artwork is available in my gallery in NFTShowroom so hopefully someone that likes it will make it part of their cool-lection. Gotta stay strong and keep going because the world monster eats you up in no time at all. Keep on running little monkey toad!
