Figure It Out: Drawing The Front View Of A Male Face

If you are familiar with my drawings then you will know it's a tradition for me to always do photorealistic drawings with reference images. Sometimes I do them with pens and other times, I work with pencils, but the goal of each drawing is to produce a very neat and more detailed version of the original image.

Folks always tell me my work is amazing, but all these while they don't know I had a weak point when it comes to the world of art. My weak point is, I find it very difficult to draw without a reference, I had issues with imaginative figure drawings, no doubt I have always admire people that do it, but I have issues coming up with something without a reference image. Well, I finally decided to break that yoke, some days back, I opened an art book I purchased a long time ago by Christopher Hart Titled Figure It Out! Drawing Essential Poses. I did a quick study about drawing the front view of a male face, and then I decided to try my hand on something. Well, I will be sharing the step by step images with you guys, do well to tell me what you think at the end.

P.S.: Go easy on me, this is my first time drawing without a reference, I'm not used to this, it's a new journey for me.🤗🤗

This was how the whole journey started, I really don't have an idea of how the whole thing will look in the end, I just had to trust the process and get creative.

After adding the eyes, nose and mouth, all I was seeing was a egg with eyes, nose and mouth 😂😂😂 but I was very eager to see how it end, so I continued.

Seeing this part, I told myself, explore! explore bro! I could see a face now and that was interesting, like, I was doing it, actually using my creative imagination instead of working with a reference image.

While working on the nose, I noticed something, I love detailed drawings 😂😂 now it's so difficult for me to rush this, but I reminded myself, the goal is to create a figure drawing without any reference, so explore.

Here, I had to rush the hair so I can work on the face proper, I did not bother giving it much detailing, I just put some stokes on it and move on.

I just could not help it, I had to give him some beards, that's how I console myself for not having side beards 😂😂, so I always enjoy drawing them, may be the universe will consider giving me beards some day😂😂😂.

I had to rush the remaining part, because I was already tired, I'm used to always drawing and taking a break when working on my commissioned drawings but this time, I stayed there till I finished the whole thing. Well, I was really happy about the outcome, my first try with imaginative figure drawing, it was an amazing experience because different ideas of what to draw keep entering my mind and it was really nice.

I still have a lot of work when it comes to drawing without reference, I plan on studying the book one by one and practice everything I learn before moving to the next chapter. Well, I will be making another front view male figure before moving to that of female. I'm glad I took this step, folks always advice me in the past to adapt this style of art, well I think now is a better time to do that. Do well to tell me what you think, and if you do imaginative drawings, tell me one of your biggest trick in the comment section.

Thanks for reading!

P.S.: All images were taken by me with my Nokia 3.2.

It's certainly not easy to draw without reference, so this is a fantastic job, considering.

Thank you very much, I appreciate your honesty.🤗🤗

Nice portrait.
Me gusto como dibujo los ojos,la técnica que aplico en el sombreado esta genial.

Muchas gracias, agradezco tu honestidad. Me alegro mucho que te guste.

If it's any consolation I can't draw with references either XP

This is not bad, and you already know how to wrangle a pencil so bit of practice and you'll be doing photorealistic drawings from imagination in no time.

Meanwhile your shading is epic.

Thank you so much, I look forward to making photorealistic drawings without any reference, just compiling different ideas in my mind and bringing them together to become one, that will be really great. Thanks for your honesty about my Shading, I really appreciate.
