Holy moly, what a day ! Everything went perfectly, but not without the tension of responsibility and the desire to do well, to complete one's mission. It's done and I'll sleep well tonight ^^
Today, we had to hang a painting lent by the Louvre Museum. It was a small oil on canvas by Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin entitled, 'La Serinette' or 'Dame variant ses amusements' dating from 1751. And according to what we were told by the person in charge delegated by the museum, the painting was estimated at more than 10 millions euros.
All of this is in line with the considerations of rarity, of the quality of the artistic work and which gives this sum, this financial aspect. But that's not what I want to talk about. The idea for me is more about responsibility.
Let me describe the scene a little bit. The box arrives. A wooden crate with black paint on it. The crate is escorted by two or more people carrying it. With them, there is necessarily a person in charge of the museum who lends the work for the duration of an exhibition, the conveyor.
The crate is then opened in the presence of the courier, the people in charge of the museum's works and the restorer, who will make the condition report, in order to check that everything is in order and that the work is indeed the right one - not a copy - and that it is not damaged.
The report is made on a table with an adequate light, often white. Once the report has been drawn up and the papers signed by all parties, this is when we enter the scene as hangers.
We take the measurements on the back of the painting, the height of the hangers and their positioning in relation to the general dimensions of the painting.
After that, we present the work to the curator of the exhibition, the one who designed the exhibition with his team. He validates the positioning on the wall and we can then start transferring the data onto the wall.
Once everything has been double-checked, triple-checked ^^ we drill directly and install the hanging system. Depending on the situation, this can range from simple nails or screws to ultra-sophisticated systems. Not rocket launchers either !
When the system is in place, we take the work and hang it. The level is then checked, both by eye and with a spirit level. Both are important, but in the end, especially for old frames, the eye always wins !
If everything is in order and as expected, we secure the work and move on to the next...
Quite simple in the end !
Yes, that's true, especially when you've been doing it for a while. But imagine doing this with 15 to 20 people at your back watching your every move, silent (or not) and almost holding their breath. It certainly changes the perspective...!
The other close call I remember was at a private foundation in the Paris area where we hung one of Vincent Van Gogh's self-portraits with a bandaged ear. Prestigious British gallery, all the exhibition staff, the director of the institution and quite a few other people we never saw. 30 to 40 people. Just imagine...
And suddenly, after a few minutes of tension, the painting is finally on the wall, you take your first real breath and everyone rushes in to take a selfie in the midst of all the hubbub... I'll never forget that scene !

Below, we get into the more technical part and I wanted to show you what our measurement and calculation charts looked like. The picture on the bottom right is the easiest to understand. The two "eyes" are the attachment points, the smile, the distance between these two points and the rest are the other dimensions, either general or relative to the attachment points...

Here it's a paper envelope, just a draft folded in two which allows to collect the dust when you drill. It's very simple, but it allows you to be clean, to look like a pro ^^ and above all to lose as little time as possible. The advantage is that, whether you are in a museum or at home, the trick works just as well !
To conclude, a picture that speaks for itself, more prosaic but with an aesthetic sense all the same... Just an extension cord and its reflection in the door as you leave after this intense day of emotions of all kinds !

Sacrebleu, quelle journée ! Tout s'est passé à merveille, mais non sans la tension de la responsabilité et de l'envie de bien faire, de mener à bien sa mission. C'est chose faite et je dormirai bien ce soir ^^
Aujourd'hui, nous avons dû accrocher une toile prêtée par le musée du Louvre. Et selon ce que nous a dit le responsable délégué par le musée, la peinture était estimée à plus de 10 millions d'euros.
Tut cela rejoins les considérations de rareté, de qualité de l'oeuvre artistique et qui donne cette somme, cet aspect financier. Mais ce n'est pas tant de cela dont je voudrait parler. L'idée pour moi est davantage celle de la responsabilité.
Laissez-moi vous décrire un peu la scène. La caisse arrive. Une caisse en bois avec des inscriptions bombées à la peinture noire. La dite caisse est escortée par deux ou plusieurs personnes qui la transporte. Avec eux, il y a forcément un responsable du musée qui prête l'oeuvre le temps d'une exposition, c'est le convoyeur.
La caisse est ensuite ouverte en présence du convoyeur, des responsables des oeuvres du musée et du restaurateur qui va faire le constat d'état, afin de vérifier que tout est en ordre et que l'oeuvre est bien la bonne - pas une copie - et qu'elle n'est pas endommagée.
Le constat se fait sur une table avec une lumière adéquate, souvent blanche. Une fois le constat réalisé et les papiers signés par toutes les parties, c'est là que nous entrons sur scène en tant qu'accrocheurs.
On prends les mesures au dos du tableau, la hauteur des accroches, leurs positionnement par rapport au dimensions générales du tableau.
Après cela, on présente l'oeuvre au commissaire de l'exposition, celui qui a conçu l'exposition avec son équipe. Il valide le positionnement sur le mur et nous pouvons alors commencer de reporter les données sur le mur.
Une fois que tout est doublement, triplement vérifié ^^ on perce en direct et on installe le système d'accroche. Suivant les cas de figure, cela peu aller du simple clou ou vis à des systèmes ultra-sophistiqués. Pas des rampes de lancement de fusées non plus, hein !
Lorsque le système est en place, on prend l'oeuvre et on l'accroche. On vérifie alors le niveau, à la fois à l'oeil et au niveau à bulles. Les deux sont importants, mais à la fin, surtout pour les cadres anciens, c'est toujours l'oeil qui prime !
Si tout est conforme et tel qu'attendu, on sécurise l'oeuvre et on passe à la suivante...
Plutôt simple au final !
Oui, c'est vrai et surtout quand on fait cela depuis un petit bout de temps. Mais imaginez faire cela avec 15 à 20 personnes dans votre dos qui scrute le moindre de vos gestes, silencieux (ou non) et qui retiennent presque leur souffle. Ça change certainement la perspective..!
L'autre fois assez proche dont je me rappelle, c'est dans une fondation privée de la région parisienne dans laquelle nous avons accroché un des autoportrait à l'oreille bandée de Vincent Van Gogh. Galerie britannique prestigieuse, tout le personnels de l'exposition, le directeur de l'institution et pas mal d'autres personnes que l'on ne voyait jamais. 30 à quarante personnes. Imaginez...
Et soudain, après quelques minutes de tension, le tableau est enfin au mur, vous prenez votre première vraie inspiration et tout le monde se rue pour faire un selfie dans un brouhaha de tous les diables... Jamais je n'oublierai cette scène !

Ci-dessous, on aborde la partie un peu plus technique et je tenais à vous montrer un peu à quoi ressemblaient nos planches de mesures et de calculs. L'image en bas à droite est la plus simple à comprendre. Les deux "yeux" sont les points d'accroche, le sourire, la distance entre ces deux points et le reste sont les autres dimensions, soit générales, soit relatives aux points d'accroche...
N'hésitez pas à me posez des questions pour plus de précisions !
Ici c'est une enveloppe en papier, juste un brouillon plié en deux qui permet de récolter la poussière lorsque l'on perce. C'est tout bête, mais ça permet d'être propre, d'avoir l'air d'un pro ^^ et surtout de perdre le moins de temps possible. L'avantage, c'est que, que l'on soit dans un musée ou chez soi, l'astuce fonctionne aussi bien !!
Pour conclure, une image qui parle d'elle même, plus prosaïque mais avec tout de même un sens esthétique... Juste une rallonge et son reflet dans la porte au moment de partir après cette journée intense en émotions de tous genres !

Ca m'a tout l'air d'avoir ete une super experience! Perso, je n'ai jamais eu 10 millions entre les mains, sauf peut-etre des evenements representant des collisions de particules codifies dans un fichier texte. J'en avais meme des centaines de millions sous la main ;)
En effet, cela fait quelques années que je fais ce métier, mais rien n’est jamais tout à fait pareil, que ce soit les œuvres, les contextes d’exposition et bien évidemment, les gens que l’on y côtoie...
Ha ça ! j’imagine même que ça dépasse de loin l’ordre de grandeur des millions !

Wow, I can imagine taking such deep breath after a long time, the funny part is you won't breath it out loud, hehe. The paintings are really expensive so I can understand the fear of the owners as well but in all is a good thing everything was okay and perfect.

So cool in many ways. I wouldn’t mind joining.
Now I know who to ask when I hang some originals up. I have a very tiny painting of one of the artist I follow. Every time I tried hanging it it wasn’t right. If we move into a house we stay for longer I will let you know 😉 normally I don’t have problems hanging art works. But this one, gave me problems since I got it. It still has hanging gear from it’s last exhibition in Denver US, maybe that’s it.
But back to your post. 😉

For us layman, it's drilling a couple of holes in the wall - simple 🙂 but what you hang on it is so valuable, imagine it fell off or the position is not perfect, what a disaster! The pressure must be immense!!

Yes, it's quite intense ^^ I've seen scandals before, albeit small to medium ones... The atmosphere is really particular in these cases, because in the end, it's so many different people at stake as well as a particular relationship, quality of the work, context of creation, history of the artist, the relationships he had... It's almost infinite !
