In 1968, Ali Sadikin, the Governor of Jakarta in the period 1966-1977, rejected the proposal of an underground tunnel. The construction costs are too expensive. He also worried that the floods and the homeless would one day fill the tunnel. Then the second proposal, the crossing bridge, becomes the best choice to be realized.
The pedestrian bridge began to stand strong on April 21, 1968. It is located right in front of Sarinah, the first modern convenience store in Jakarta, on Jalan M.H. Thamrin. On the day of the inauguration, Ali Sadikin named it 'Kartini Bridge', because it coincided with the date of the birth of R.A. Kartini, National patriot.
Now the bridge has become one of the instagramable spots in the city of Jakarta, after the latest revitalization, the JPO, now called Sudirman, is becoming stronger and more beautiful.
JPO Sudirman carries the theme of Gelora, Gelora which means symbolization of the turmoil and enthusiasm of the Indonesian people to continue to progress and develop.
