To be honest before I joined Brigada Eskwela I thought it was about cleaning the classrooms before the school year starts. You know, just sweep here wipe there paint a little and then go home. It seemed simple.
After spending a whole day volunteering for Brigada Eskwela I realized that it is not just about cleaning the schools. It actually shows the reality of being a teacher that many people do not see.
This year I was with CTE organizations when we participated in Brigada Eskwela at Malinta Elementary School. Each organization had least five members who volunteered to help get the school ready for the start of classes.
As volunteers we cleaned around 15 areas in the school including the classrooms and other spaces. We did a lot of tasks like cleaning the rooms, gardening, painting washing the curtains and rugs waxing the floor and cleaning the chairs and tables.
At first it was really tiring. The sun was hot it was exhausting. Sometimes it was dirty.
While I was doing those simple tasks I found myself looking around the classrooms. I saw the chairs, the learning materials and the walls that the teachers worked hard to decorate.. Then it hit me.
As a teacher I realized how much teachers sacrifice without anyone noticing. People often say that teachers just teach,. After seeing things up close I realized that being a teacher is more than just standing in front of a classroom. Teachers do a lot of things like cleaning organizing, decorating and preparing learning materials.
What is sad to realize is that many teachers in the Philippines are not paid enough. They still spend their own money to make the classrooms better for their students. Imagine earning a salary and still buying materials with your own money because you want your students to learn in a comfortable and meaningful environment.
Sometimes the salary is not even enough. The teachers still use their own money to buy things like classroom decorations learning materials, electric fans, supplies and little things that the students may not even notice.
While I was cleaning that day I kept thinking: this is how hard it is to be a teacher.. Somehow instead of discouraging me it made me admire the teachers even more.
If I become a teacher one day I want to be the kind of teacher who creates a classroom where the students feel safe, welcome and excited to learn. A classroom that may not be perfect but feels warm and cozy. A classroom where you can feel the effort that the teacher put in.
Because Brigada Eskwela made me realize something, behind every clean classroom organized chair decorated wall and peaceful learning environment is a teacher who quietly gave their effort time, patience and sometimes even their own money.
Honestly that realization has stayed with me.
