Ahh engagement... For how many years i kept repeating this word! I think that engagement is the most essential element outside of "quality content" in order to succeed in Hive, heck even life! Even if your posts are on a whole other level, if you don't interact with the people commenting on you or with other interesting posts then the end is near for you!
There is an exception if you have "friends" in "high places" that just autovote whatever shit you post, but even then the whole interaction and feelings you get from it will be missed!
Anyway, I think i speak for every author out there (or maybe not :p) that we all feel exceptional when somebody makes a comment on our posts. Now when i say comment, i am talking about a true one or at least funny! Comments like "nice post sir" etc etc is our least favorite i have to inform you!
But is it hard to interact with others?
I don't have much time to spend in here what should i do?
Fear not just copy/paste and comment "nice post kind sir" or "follow for follow"!
I am obviously joking, don't try this at home
Moving on, to answer to "your" questions, it really isn't that hard and you don't need that much time either, in order to interact and engage with others.
For starters just find posts and authors that write about things you are interested in. Then the whole reading will become easier for sure and you may be motivated to both comment or even write a post as well! Or you can read some funny posts that may be even a single meme that won't take much of your time!
What i do to save some of my time and invest it in Hive, is that i don't watch TV or the news at all. I prefer to check a little bit via some sites and then i will spare the saved time in Hive and read a bunch of posts!

Engagement is definitely the way to go... I've slacked off a bit in recent months due to real life, but I'm starting to try and make the effort to reach out to other people's blogs again!
i get the feeling! i caught myself slacking from time to time as well. sometimes it's as you said real life, other times i don't think my posts take the "light" they deserve (it's my fault though as i slack off at interacting with others :P), or just plain boredom, but i want to make the whole engagement thing like it's a good habit
