One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.

Wednesday, the mid-point of the working week a perfect time to stop and think back and ahead. #whatsupwednesday is a snapshot of what's been going on, or will be, based on a little thought and reflection and general stuff that's rolling around in my noggin.

Books

I've been feeling the need to read something different lately as I've been reading quite heavy non-fiction lately. I contemplated hitting some podcasts but decided against it as I really love the feel of a book in my hands, the sound of flipping pages in an otherwise silent house, with the smell of coffee or tea brewing; And snacks...Always snacks.

I've decided to re-read a series I last read some twenty five years ago by one of my favourite authors, Raymond. E. Feist, called the Riftwar Saga which begins with Magician. It's of the fantasy genre and the author has expanded upon the Riftwar trilogy with many spin-off books that I have also read so there's plenty to read - Some I haven't yet also.

It's going over familiar ground but these books are reliable meaning I know they will be good and I feel the need for something familiar right now; I also always find something new when going back over a book I've read in the past.

I ordered all three and look forward to them arriving so I can immerse myself in the world of Midkemia and the amazing writing skills of this author. A great way to spend winter days I think. Hurry up book delivery, I'm waiting!

Bikes

If you follow my posts you'll know I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and hiking is an everyday thing. I'm have around 25 kilometres of scrubland trails literally across the road from my house complete with kangaroos, koalas, kookaburras, birds, snakes and all the other things one finds in the Australian bush - There's also bikes. Mountain bikes, to be precise, as the area is also a down-hill mountain bike park.

I've been warming to the idea of getting my own over the last couple of months as I've seen the fun the mountain bikers have doing jumps and carving up the trails. Fun. Sure, there's often spectacular crashes, but no pain no gain right? [Stupid bloody saying].

Anyway, I'm keen to investigate the scenario and in the next few weeks will hit a few bike stores to find out what I may need and what costs are involved in getting set up. Bike, helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads are the minimum I guess...Maybe a new life insurance policy too; Just in case I crash and burn.

Flights

It's been close to two years since I've flown anywhere and in the last several days I've been contemplating travel here within Australia.

I spoke with one of my brothers who lives about 3,500 kilometres away in far north Queensland and considering it's his son's third birthday in a couple months I thought it would be a great time to be there.

After wading through all the could be cancelled at any time due to the pandemic notices on the websites of a couple carriers I decided that it's viable from a cost perspective and I'll probably take the risk of having to quarantine back here in the advent of a pandemic flare-up. I've not booked yet although that won't be too far away I think.

Anyway, that's about it for today - I'm home for the next week or so due to an event that occurred today; I'll talk about it some other time. So keep me occupied with a comment or two below if you have the time, I swear I'll not let the pain killers impede my judgment.

Those fantasy books sound ok, I am enjoying all Dan Brown’s book at the moment, worth a read if you like puzzle adventures fiction stories.

I've read a lot of Dan Brown. Good author for sure.

Dude. Every decade or so I buy and read the Empire series (Daughter, Mistress, Servant? from memory), set in the same universe, and co-written with Janny Wurts. The society is modelled on Feudal Korea. Incredible series of books. Those Minwinabi bastards. Arakasi, the spymaster. The Natama stones. I'm there. Pug/Milamber drops in, but he's not a central theme. Good times. Happy memories.

Yep, read them too. Such a great spin off and a pretty interesting world he's created. Feist is such a creative mind. I'm still waiting for the series to come to HBO. 😁

That is an excellent combination. I hope you can travel. Be well!

Thank you, it's looking good for the flights although I know quite a few who had bookings and their flights were cancelled by the airline at the last minute. This makes it a bit annoying for those with work-leave planned around the flights. Anyway, I'll see how it goes and take it as it comes.

Thanks for looking at my post and commenting.

If it's better to let it flow, without putting pressure on yourself

I totally agree. Having lower expectations makes for less disappointment.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Ah, as entertaining as this was... there's some definite false advertising going on here... of which I totally approve.

Lol...Was hoping someone noticed. 🤣

Well, I felt ripped off the same way @galenkp. Anyway I hope you don't have any accident with the bike.

I hope he has a tiny little accident on the bike... there has to be some consequence to misleading us...

😂 I would rather he make another post talking about the item he omitted.

Hope all your wishes about books, bikes and flights fulfil. I have never read a series because engineering books are so jealous and huge that they don't want us to get eyes off from them and read other books like a jealous chubby girlfriend 😛. I don't ride bike also may be due to Dystychiphobia.

You have Dystychiphobia? That must disrupt your life, inhibit you quite a lot. Have you delved into ways to overcome it? Tell me to bugger off if I'm being too inquisitive.

My brother is an electrical engineer and nautical architect/engineer so I know all about engineering books. Fortunately I've never had to read one. I'm the stupid one in my family. 😆

No no you are always welcome no need to bugger off and I tried once but due to the phobia I got off from the bike and never tried again but I have thought to get rid of from this phobia in few months once I am done with my exams.
Haha actually you read more interesting books as compare to our books.

Ah ok, yeah I've had my share of crashed when on pushbikes, mainly as a kid although there was one unfortunate incident in my early 20's when I was being an idiot on a bike and crashed in a major way. Lol. These days I don't ride but with my thoughts angled towards getting a mountain bike maybe I'll have some new crashed and burned stories to tell. 😆

Haha I hope I don't read crash stories my you be safe .

Oh man getting on a plane to go north sounds good.

I remember Feist from many years ago. I'd like to read more these holidays too - must head to library.

As for cycling, I told you yesterday how that ended for me. Not pretty. Not happy Jan.

But yeah, you should, for sure!

No bikes for you! You're banned from bikes for a while, at least until you forget your recent shenanigans and recover a little too. Me? It's been a while sincd I crashed a bike so...The memory of pain and suffering is a dim one..maybe I'll get to enjoy it again soon. 😭

Also, that other thing we spoke of yesterday. Went ok today but I'm in a lot of pain right now. I'm on the couch eating pain pills like tic tacs. I'm alive though.

I just get distracted easily, is problem.

Glad you are alive - and I hope the pain killers are sweet. xxx May the pain ease soon x

It's you easily distracted types that people like me, distractive people, prey upon. 😂

I'm all good, tough as old boot leather, kind of. I'll live.

Read, ride and travel...who doesn't want that on a sunny wednesday.

I haven't travelled much because of virus. I usually ride on my bike, as it is a common mode of travel here instead of travelling through a car. Lol.

But I have been reading a lot in the last year. Currently, I am reading "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius
Book by Donald Robertson"

It's full of stories of Socrates,Seneca, Marcus Aurelius childhood stories, Epictetus, and a dozen other whose name I usually forget.

If you haven't read it, give it a try😅

Also, on that note, a quote from Seneca:

"Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life."—Seneca

Interesting book to read. I have heard about it, someone I know read it and it has been on my reading list for a while, with a gazillion by others.

I was named after a fellow who was physician to Marcus Aurelius who described him as "Primum sane medicorum esse, philosophorum autem solum". First among doctors and unique among philosophers. Anyway, just some useless trivia for you.

Old Seneca was a wise chap huh? Nice quote - One of my favourites.

Thanks for commenting again, it's been a while since I've seen you on my posts and it's good to see you back. 😊

Yepp, the 2nd wave of virus in India has affected businesses, and personal life a lot.

Many known ones and relatives have lost lives. My small time education business is shut down.

And a lot of messed up things going on in my personal life.

Wasn't in right mind for a long time to be social on hive or in general. So, I shut off. Didn't talk to anyone for months except 2-3 family members.

Anyways, ups and downs are part of life. Gotta learn how to live with that and smile😉

I have seen hoe difficult things are over there and it's not getting much better I think. Still, it's good to see your attitude seems to be better, that the disconnect from hive seemed to help and now [hopefully] you can push on and make up some ground. All the best.

Thanks man😎

I showed middle child the post title and both of us were “well then” 😆

I’m stuck in a maccas atm as she has a job interview 😳

I’m pretty sure I read at least part of that series and got irritated with the main character 😅 it’s been a while but it sounds very familiar.

Mountain biking is a lot of fun (I didn’t get hardcore into it as I didn’t have that much of a death wish but it was also kind of hard to avoid due to terrain where I grew up 🤣). Just be careful how you calculate your risks 😜

Hope you’re able to make nephew’s third birthday! That sounds so cute 😆

I really enjoy Feist as a writer; Builds good characters, believable dialogue and creative. I'm looking forward to starting them. I actually have the first book still, in hard cover but it's personally signed by the author from when I met him at a book signing, so I'll wait for the paper backs.

I'm still considering the mountain bike thing, just researching. I've seen some pretty decent crashes and am pretty sure I don't bounce as well as I used to so...We'll see. The research can't hurt though.

Hmm, yeah a bit of false advertising in the title...I'm blaming the pain killers. Got me all loopy. 🤪

What about the boobs part? Are you getting new boobs that you'll have to strap on for the bike trail? Will the boob job come with the life insurance policy? Was I clickbaited? 😭

Oh damn it, I must have forgotten to add in the boobs part. I'll put it in my next post.

Congratulations, you just got clickbaited by the G-dog.

Lol excellent job there. I got a cheap second hand mountain bike myself, earlier this year. I've not used it since I traveled for my wedding plans in March but now that we've finally sorted it out, I should be back riding it by Monday next week.

It's plenty fun but dangerous; no dangerous terrain for me, just crazy ass drivers lol

Haha, well nothing like getting duped by the word boobs. Catches me out every time too!

Crazy drivers are probably worse than fast, technical down hill tracks lined with trees and Australian scrub...One must have eyes in the back of one's head I would say!

I didn't know you were getting married. Congratulations!

Thanks man. I shared pictures of the wedding on my blog and talked about it there.

I've been pretty busy and preoccupied so it's gets difficult to see everything that goes on around the blockchain, but best wishes to the both of you.

Came for the boobs, stayed for the books.

I've been recommended that Riftwar thing often enough. Never got to it, though. I had too much fantasy at some point and I kind of strayed away from that path.

I'm considering a new bike myself since I am in the middle of changing locations and it's low hill country around here.

Also, planning something worth mentioning in The Pew but perhaps not this week. It's machete week now. Actually, I was considering learning wielding a scythe.

Lol...Been a while since I did a clickbait title...Today was the day to break the drought. 😁

I won't recommend the Riftwar Saga as you are probably sick of hearing about it but, it's good and I recommend it. Lol.

I'm not sure about the bike thing...I have a tendancy to want to be good at things I endeavour to do and with down hill biking that tends to mean a lot of crashing prior to the getting good part happens. We'll see. The research won't hurt too much though.

I'm intrigued about the PEW content. Archery maybe? I'll be patient and look out for it. Also, who doesn't want to know how to effectively wield a scythe. Works for the grim reaper so why not others? 🤣

Works for the grim reaper so why not others?

Got a rusty one. I also have this hoodie thing but it stops short around waist level.

Lol...Well, I'd roll with it regardless. Sure, the robe is a bit short, but the overall effect could still be good.
