UEFA Champions League Manchester City vs Olympique Lyonnais Preview

in OCD4 years ago

Another step closer to the Champions League final for any of these two teams that can bring the win home. Before we compare their stats at all, we should note that Manchester City ended the premier league in style. Although they didn't win, they came out 2nd position with many points above the team below them.

Lyon, on the other hand, came out 7th position in the Ligue 1 with 40 points. With these stats, you can easily see that Manchester City already has one edge over them, mainly because the Premier League is a really tough one. Well, let's consider some other possible factors.

Previous Games Records

It is widespread knowledge that the premier league is one of the most competitive football leagues present at the moment, and Manchester City is one of the toughest in the league. Since the league resumed in June, City has been at their best taking on every team they came across and taking most of them down.

Since June, when the league resumed, they played a total of 13 games, out of the thirteen, they didn't play any draw, but unfortunately, they were lost to 3 teams. As a matter of fact, no one would have expected those losses based on how terrific the group was.

Now, we all know the story of how the French league was halted entirely due to the coronavirus, however, when the French football federation realized that other leagues were becoming interesting even without spectators to watch, they had to kickstart the Ligue 1.

Olympique Lyonnais hasn't had enough playtime since the resumption of activities, and this may be a problem as they quite recently just lost to Juventus but qualified based on aggregate scores. Lyon has played seven games since July and has lost 2; they also drew one, which later ended in a loss after penalties. They, however, won the rest of them.

Winning Margins

In this section, we're going to take a short look at the two teams' goal-scoring ability and see which one has more chances to record more goals and win the game.

It is apparent that Manchester City is ruthless with goals, especially when they're faced with a team they're stronger than. Most of their wins in the premier league were with two or more goals margins, and it has never mattered if the group is a big one or a small one. In four of their matches since June, they won with five goals to nothing. This is proof enough that Lyon is in for some real trouble.

On the other hand, Lyonnais has hardly won a game where the winning margin exceeded one goal. In this match, we should expect goals, lots and lots of them. Most of which would come from the City side anyway.

Prediction/Verdict

This game would quickly end in favor of Manchester City, so we'll place the odds at 1.4 for City to win, 2.5 for Lyon to win, and 4.5 for a draw, which is less likely.

May the better side win.
