It is interesting to observe how German romanticism, at the hand of one of its greatest exponents, Goethe, put us on the track of that high flow of sentiment that animated the spirit of the Gothic cathedral builders.
One of the keys, precisely, we find in what is perhaps the most universal of his works, the
moving 'Faust', when Mephistopheles, that wandering spirit at the service of the sword of Damocles, as metaphorically could be considered the inoperative hand left of God, that enigmatic phrase affirmed emphatically: you will resemble the spirit you conceive.
The spirit that the Gothic architects conceived in their constructions was placed in the heights, in view of which, it is not surprising that the Promethean and at the same time immeasurable columns, on whose metaphorical shoulders the entire cathedral framework was supported, constituted a comparative Jacob's ladder, which symbolically connected the earth with the sky.
But they also knew that by forcing the faithful to raise their eyes to the heights, they caused their gaze to go beyond, piercing the veil of the material, to settle in that universe, foreseen by Art, to which only the spirit, when you stop yawning, you can access.

Me quedo con ese último párrafo, @juancar347! Justamente, como te decía en estos días, lo que significaba para mí mirar el cielo. Mientras leo estas líneas entiendo por qué el sentimiento de pequeñez, de indefensión, de orfandad, pero también, extrañamente, de protección, cobijo. Me imagino entrar a un recinto como este y sentirme sobrecogida e intimidada, como si Dios me estuviera viendo. Bonito sábado!
Es impresionante, te lo aseguro. Eran algo más que recintos sagrados: eran auténticos medios de trascender la consciencia y por lo tanto, de establecer una comunicación con Dios. Perfectas cajas de resonancia, la música en su interior era otra de las 'herramientas' que simbólica y psicológicamente, 'conectaban' el cielo con la tierra, como una metafórica escala de Jacob. Los rayos del sol, distribuyédose a través de los ventanales. Unos ventanales, tratados alquímicamente y cuyo secreto, la Ciencia moderna todavía no ha podido desvelar, que refractaban la luz de una forma soberanamente especial...Mirar hacia arriba, hacia las bóvedas, donde también los canteros dejaban señales y secretos, en ocasiones da vértigo. Pero en fin, están tan reformadas y tienen tantos y tantos objetos, que más que catedrales parecen auténticos museos. Pero incluso así, la experiencia, ya te aseguro que es única. Un abrazo
