Esa Kripanik is a famous artist from the remote Inuit community of Igloolik, Nunavut. He favours stone, ivory, bone and antler as his preferred mediums. Esa Kripanik focuses on creating sculptures to look as real as possible. The stone is rarely polished and a dry flat finish is preferred. This piece is carved from soapstone and rests on a white limestone base. What makes sculptures by Esa Kripanik so different are the polished engravings often carved onto the sides. There is a beautiful arctic Narwhal on the left side of the bear and two spectacular Ring Seals on the other side.

That's a great piece. Reminds me I should visit some museums this summer. There's a couple of new art installments popping up in town the next few weeks.

Well, the soapstone polar bear is cool enough in itself, but I love how this artist is placing engravings on his mini sculptures, not something I've ever seen before. !LUV
