Hive: Why People Join— Why They Leave And What Makes Them Stick

Like most people who join hive, I had no idea what this platform was all about. I just wanted to try it out. Explore the mystery tokens that people were getting for posting. And at best— make some money.

But I had no idea that I will stick here for so long. And make so many good friends along the way.

Today, while reading Tarazkp's post, I was thinking why people join hive, and why a lot of them leave after some time. Taraz's had a valid point that hive is not made for everyone. And everyone is not made for hive. Not everyone understands the power of decentralisation. It's benefits and how to enjoy it.

I had a couple of reasons too why people leave hive and why many stick.

Why people join:

➼ They want to try out new things
People are often attracted to new things. Something they can't understand, but want to.
They don’t know what they are doing. They want to understand what it is. Most of the people that I know on hive, didn't knew how it worked. And that's what attracted them all. Curiosity is a wonderful thing.

➼ Money
It's the shiny thing that attracts more people here. A wonderful idea that you can make money while you use social media. But what people forget is that they join looking at the top authors rewards. And it will take them a long time and consistent efforts to reach there.

Also, some people who buy hive on exchanges, explore it further. That's how I discovered it. I bought some steem in 2017 from bittrex and explored it further. My curiosity took me here.

➼ To shill refrral links.
Many people think that even if they don’t earn money, they can shill their referrals and earn money by taking users to a refrral site. Such as binance, bitmex. Also, many people try to milk followers by asking users to follow them on instagram, twitter etc. The sole purpose of these people is to gain following, through any medium they can get. And to do this, they post same content on a number of platforms.

Why they leave?

  1. When they don’t make any money
  2. When people don’t click on their links
  3. When they get downvoted for their less valuable content

People expect to make quick bucks without any efforts. Making money is difficult for even those who work a lot. And if you don't work on your content and engagement, it becomes almost impossible to earn anything.

@sidwrites published an awesome post The Ultimate Guide To Making $1 A Day On Hive

In short, he shared that to earn your first dollar on hive, you need to:

  • Add value— share valuable knowledge
  • Be committed— post/engage daily
  • Challenge yourself— to connect with more people, to write better content

I am sure anyone following these simple yet necessary steps won't fail on hive.

Why people stick?

➼ The community
Believe it or not, but hive has one of the best community online. I have never seen any place where you can find so many supportive people. Who will later become your friend yet remain anonymous. This platform is more fun than any other.

➼ Opportunities are endless
Which other platform provides you an opportunity to earn from the very first day. You can make an introduceyourself post and it can get you 20-30$. You take your first step with immense motivation.

Also, when you are around for a while, you can create your own projects. Earn from curation if you don't like to produce content. Find games like Dcity, Splinterlands to play and earn some money. And then there are challenges going on everyday which can fetch you some hive. Truly, the opportunities are endless.

➼ You have freedom to share any type of content you want
Apart from being censorship resistant, you can post any type of content you like. It can be your travel story, your random thoughts about a recent event. Or a how to guide.

You can literally try out 10 different things in a week. I don’t know if anyone else realized it or not. But if you make a blog/ youtube channel, you get to stick with your niche— to grow your audience. Here you don’t care that much about your audience. The sole focus is to produce good content and to make connections with other people. So you are free to post about tech one day, travel on the next and a personal blog the next day. Nobody will question you.

This is true, I joined Steemit 11 months ago and was on hiatus just until May—all because I don't understand how it works and I also can't post / vote before.

When I came back after finding a link to Steemit again, everyone were moving, this time I was curious, I read a lot of posts and learned better about Steem and Hive.

By June, I became more active in Hive and started inviting people. Out of a number, only a handful joined, and out of those who join, only one did post something weekly.

I agree on your points and Hive is really a welcoming place. I met people who helped me out too, and people here are forgiving on whatever theme you're posting about as long as it's well thought of, quality contents.

Lol, your journey sounds something like mine.

I joined steemit in 2017. Left it in 2018, joined again in 2020. Invited a lot of my friends, most left after a few days.

Good place.

I wish you good luck for your hive journey.😄

True, samee.

I'm actually loving Hive, than WP. WP was formal, need to stick to niche, and censor yourself. Hive is different, people are being "human" here, not some Celebrity-Fan sort of relationship. Haha!

Yepp...people are real and good here🙂

I was attracted by the technology. I did not expect to make much, although in the early days of Steem some were making thousands from a post. I have stuck with it because it's fun. I like the community and enjoy helping people out. I want to see it achieve its potential.

Lol, I remember... In 2017, I made 300-400$ on a couple of my posts too. Was at the top of world.

The reason I stick to this place is because of people. Really love some people I have found here❤️❤️❤️

I have seen you around a lot of times. Usually in others posts.

I believe that good times are ahead of us🙂🙂

I wouldn't be here if it wasn't still fun. We get some drama, but most people are great.

Im in this one since 2017. Same thing, a bit of writing, making a buck. But it is fun..and addictive..And with all these potential in the making Im even enthusiastic with it, because the technology gets explained here. There is such a source of info...
Sometimes im more active than other times...but always keep coming back

Same, been here since July 2017....keep coming back. I always love to join back when some old friends are active again.

When lockdown started, a lot of old friends were active. So I joined back. Been here daily for 3 months now. Really love this place❤️❤️

Same thing...Well...when the lockdown started I was kind of busy (healthcare) but now it kind of normalized and there is not much else to do...Im way more back <3

Wow, nice....where are you from?

Living in Holland currently. Situation is relatively under control here ATM, but we have to see what will happen ;)

Where do you live?

Cool, I am from India...really bad situation. Daily cases are increasing...hope it is controlled in the next few months.

Pretty much all of it. I have three years here and built me account slowly. Had great fun, met interesting people and most importantly learned so much.
There are so many crazy smart people on here thinking for the future. It's great to be a part of that.
I love being part of something with such big potential. It really wouldn't take much to bring in thousands of users or push the price up a few dollars. Just the right app or idea. That's exciting.

Definitely...one idea can change life.

I know, learning part is so important. I have never learned more anywhere else than I have learned on hive. The most important thing is I have learned the importance of books. The reason to read books. And to find joy in small things.

Hive is truly an experience in life.🙂
