Help astronomers classify exoplanets/Ayuda a los astrónomos a clasificar exoplanetas

We call all planets outside of our solar system exoplanets.
Since the Swiss astronomer Didier Queloz discovered the first exoplanet in history in 1995 until today, more than 4,000 exoplanets have been discovered in different solar systems of the Milky Way.

Since these planets, like ours, do not emit their own light, it is very difficult to detect them considering that they are at least 4 light years away from us, which is where the closest star is and the little brightness that they can reflect are overshadowed by the star.

There are several systems to detect these extrasolar planets but in this post we are going to focus on the Transit detection system, which consists of detecting the decrease in the star's brightness when one of these exoplanets crosses it ahead.

The NASA-funded TESS satellite (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) uses this method, observing the light emitted by stars over two-year periods to detect any decrease in brightness that might be caused by a transiting planet.

The satellite will scan a wide region of space in which it will control the brightness of the 200,000 brightest and closest to Earth, in all these stars it is expected to find more than 20,000 new exoplanets.

Obviously, the data obtained by TESS are not photographs like the ones I put here, but a handful of pixels that have to be interpreted and, if we take into account the data of 200,000 stars must be collected over 2 years, the amount of data has to be huge.

That is why astronomers have set up a web page so that those who love astronomy can help them identify patterns that may indicate the presence of exoplanets since given the characteristics of the data it is not easy to leave the task exclusively in computers hands.

If you are one of those amateur astronomers or you are simply bored in these hours of confinement, you can try to classify exoplanets with the link below.

¡Enjoy it!

¡Hala, a disfrutar!
