A Historic Day! Tipping is live on PeakD!

TIPSSSSS.jpg

Today is a special day for me. If you've hung around my blog for any amount of time you know I've got some opinions about things, but there hasn't been anything I've talked/screamed/begged for more than...tips.

It's so simple, yet so powerful. This whole system we have here is built with a currency as the lifeblood. It's also primarily used for social applications, and until today, there wasn't an easy and clearly obvious way to send that currency with the proper communication of "I'm sending this to you as a tip/donation for this particular thing". With the same communication that an upvote conveys basically.

But it's here. It's finally here. There's some really cool ideas in the implementation as well that I won't spoil because I want you to play with the feature. What I will say is that there is a small burn fee for sending a tip which is the exact sort of thing I just mentioned in a previous post where I stated that these sorts of services should support the overall system. The reasoning for this was actually more to stop people from endlessly tipping themselves from alts, but the end result is the same.

Tipping is the great equalizer. Have you ever watched a Youtube or Twitch streamer and see them getting tipped 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 dollars at a time with tips? This is a regular thing that happens all the time. This is what professional content creators are used to. Now that exists here on Hive and large support for a creator is not something that will take thousands or millions of dollars in investment. I mean, think about that for a second. We tell content creators to come here and bring their fans here for what? So now all your fans have to do is invest thousands so they can upvote you less than a dollar.

How about we just make it easy as possible for your fans to just give you a dollar. I think (of course) we need to push this even further. Add these tips to the api so that more can be done with this information. It could be used to create a seperate or hybrid feed. Then that opens up a whole world of possibilities.

I think we should change the whole narrative to be honest. Think of upvotes as a perk of being an investor, but tipping is the "main" way you support the creators you love and build features around that idea. I know a lot of you probably aren't ready to go there with me yet, but I think it's a much healthier way to operate than what we're currently doing.

Tipping keeps money in the system longer and gives Hive a use case. It's liquid so it's DIRECT support for a creator you want to support and you can tip like a whale on your first day on the platform. I think we've just scratched the surface of the future and I couldn't be more excited by it! So leave me a tip will ya! Try it out, show support, thank the devs, all that good stuff. The Peak peeps are really kicking ass and they deserve a lot of credit and support. Let's push to take this powerful feature even further and take Hive to the next level! Buzz with me Hivers! BUZZ WITH MEEEEEE! :p

See you all in the next post.

And it's based on a pretty decentralized protocol so if any other interfaces want to do it they're invited to join.

Also great post!! Feel free to put it in the PeakD community.
Though some changes to cross-post are coming up next.

One down side of it is we have to use the active key ( which aligns to the general principle of requiring the active key for any transfer), and using the active key more and more, may create some vulnerabilities. One may for example copy and paste it some where by mistake or just leave in the clipbrd.

I would think, we should have some mechanism where tipping up to some amount would not need an active key, say 5 or 10 hive, or even a user configurable one. That would make tipping more usable.

Yep, just make a deposit to the tipping service and call it with a comment or custom_json provided by interface.

For now you can try @tipu with !tip :)

Some more details on the deposit to tipping service ?

There is the ability with the tipping protocol for a 3rd party to state that the tip was given in your name. Right @cardboard? So that allows for the potential for you to store tokens somewhere that would allow you to make tips with posting key i suppose if you trust them with your tokens.

Nothing like that exists right now but it's possible.

didn't peaklock work with Active key before the last update?

🎁 Hi @sanjeevm! You have received 0.1 HIVE tip from @cardboard!

Check out @cardboard blog here and follow if you like the content :)

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide.

That is really cool. On Whaleshares they have removed voting completely and now just have tipping. It seems to be working very well and I am happy to see this hybrid approach of having both tipping and voting coming to Hive.
I must keep some liquid Hive for when my upvote just doesn't show enough appreciation.

Historic day in price movement also. We got a double whammy today.
