Health Inequality on the Rise Amidst Covid19

in OCD4 years ago

Hello Everyone,

Welcome once again to my blog, i hope you are all staying safe and adhering to all the social protocols to curb the spread of the virus. Today i want to talk about some of the issues that have arose as a result of the corona virus pandemic and what your thoughts are on how things could be done to improve the situation.

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of infirmity or disease whereas health care is considered the rendering of medical service to individuals or a community, and this is aimed at maintaining or improving health and curing of diseases.

Health inequality is considered as the difference in the health status of people as a result of they been in different segregation in the community or state.

Health inequality has lots of detrimental effect on the less privilege of the society because the distribution of health resources mostly favor those in higher positions, with higher social status and the rich in the society. The urban settlement also has a higher advantage over the rural settle and the working class has an upper hand over the aged and the young. A quintessential of this was observed in Italy in the peak of their infection when priority was given to the youth over the aged because they were believed to have more years ahead of them. It is not as if it was the Doctors fault or anything but this virus had people playing god and gap between the groups in the society widening.

For lack of knowledge and financial disadvantage, many are put at risks. People with access to essential commodities after inflating prices made it almost impossible for the poor to be able to fend for themselves. Already sick patients have difficulty procuring drugs that subsequently they had access to easily and at a cheap price because now they have become very expensive. Imagine lupus patients whose drugs of treatment included the hydroxychloroquine, an antiviral once used for malaria treatment, whose price was once 18usd now have to buy it around 43usd.

For individuals living in deprived communities and slums who make about 5usd to fend for themselves and their families things are even much worse. Lock downs affect these people most and in the case of an infection how would these people be able to take care of their health. Even a procuring of nose masks to keep themselves safe becomes a problem sometimes. And then there is the issue of stigmatization which is on the rise.

I believe and have seen governments doing more to help people in this group of the society but i believe more can however be done, more policies implemented and relief provided. What do you think about the issue of health inequality on the rise especially in developing countries? What do you suppose can be done to help the poor in the society?
