[EN] At what point can a urinal become a work of art?

To define in the first instance at what point an object becomes a work of art we should define what art is, this is a question that leaves room for ambiguity, because no one knows for sure what would be an adequate definition for art, you can cite several definitions from different dictionaries or authors, but that would not stop being subjective, I think everyone has their own definition of art, and this Duchamp made it clear, he revolutionized what was methodically called art. Although abstract art already existed, Duchamp took it to the next level and created a new type of art called conceptual art, where the artist turned into an artist the one who judged what was a work of art, that is, the artist was the spectator; seeing the content of the work itself (in this case a signed urinal) the viewer interpreted what he thought appropriate with respect to the meaning conveyed by the work, not so with works such as "Cenacolo or L'ultima cena" or "La Joconde" by Leonardo Da Vinci that have an implicit meaning of what they want to convey, some may seem beautiful and others not, but the meaning is not very variable with respect to popularity; On the other hand, Duchamp's work does, everyone can interpret whatever, either a fabulous interpretation of what the artist thought about what it would mean (like an artistic revolution or a polemic opinion about the art of those times) or they can also have a very bad opinion about the work, like saying that it is not art or things like that that belittle the artistic value of the object selected to be called art. I believe that art is based on transmitting more than something being aesthetically beautiful. I think nothing transmits more than conceptual art, because it is the viewer who decides what to interpret, that does not happen with a landscape painting, it is all there, there is nothing to break down, there is nothing to interpret under the bias of previous personal experiences, under the journey of introspection, there is nothing more to interpret than to see that and say that it is a beautiful landscape, or that it reminds us of some place we have been, does it transmit? Yes, but in my opinion less than conceptual art, because they give us everything they want us to see, they don't make us see beyond the rustic of the object presented, as Octavio Paz would say, Duchamp's work is more philosophical and critical, it would be in vain to question the aesthetics of his work.
This whole point reminded me of when in fourth year in the subject of Artistic Languages we had to do an assignment: Present a work of art. It could be pictures, paintings, stories, acts, songs, etc. With our group we decided to do something similar to Duchamp, while everyone did what is methodically called art, we did conceptual art, we wrote on an onion with a marker "The tomato is banal", when we presented it to the whole class they were perplexed, everyone had done what they were expected to do, So when it was our turn we explained that it was a work of art and we also explained why, but we did not explain the meaning of the work, what it meant, because to finish the act and for it to be called a work of art the public had to decide what meaning they gave to an already existing object minimally modified. The answers were various, diverse and equally interesting, this made the professor excited, because each person saw in that onion something different and managed to convey the artistic. I'm not going to lie, we did it because we did not feel like doing the work, but nevertheless we managed to convey the spirit of a work of art, since then I am a supporter of conceptual art and a declared fan of Duchamp, John Cage and other conceptual artists.
[ES] ¿En qué momento un urinario puede convertirse en una obra de arte?
Para definir en primera instancia en qué momento un objeto se convierte en una obra de arte deberíamos definir qué es el arte, esta es una pregunta que deja lugar a las ambigüedades, pues nadie sabe a ciencia cierta cuál sería una definición adecuada para el arte, se pueden citar varias definiciones de distintos diccionarios u autores, pero no dejaría eso de ser subjetivo, creo que cada persona tiene su propia definición de arte, y esto Duchamp lo dejó bien claro, revolucionó lo que metódicamente era llamado arte. Si bien ya existía el arte abstracto Duchamp lo llevó al siguiente nivel y creó un nuevo tipo de arte llamado arte conceptual, donde el artista convertía en artista a quien juzgaba qué era una obra de arte, es decir, el artista era el espectador; viendo el contenido de la obra en sí (en este caso un urinario firmado) el espectador interpretaba lo que le parecía adecuado respecto al significado que le transmitía la obra, no así con obras como “Cenacolo o L’ultima cena” o “La Joconde” de Leonardo Da Vinci que tienen un significado implícito de lo que quieren transmitir, a unos le pueden parecer bellas y a otros no, pero el significado no es muy variable respecto a la popularidad; en cambio, la obra de Duchamp sí, cada quien puede interpretar lo que sea, ya sea una interpretación fabulosa sobre lo que haya pensado el artista respecto a qué significaría eso (como ser una revolución artística o una opinión polémica respecto al arte de esos tiempos) o también pueden tener una opinión muy mala respecto a la obra, como decir que eso no es arte o cosas por el estilo que subestiman el valor artístico del objeto seleccionado para ser llamado arte. Creo que el arte se basa en transmitir más que en que algo sea estéticamente bello. Creo que nada transmite más que el arte conceptual, pues es el espectador quien decide que interpreta, esto con una pintura de un paisaje no sucede, está todo ahí, no hay nada que desglosar, no hay nada que interpretar bajo el sesgo de las experiencias personales previas, bajo el viaje de la introspección, no hay nada más que interpretar que ver eso y decir que es un lindo paisaje, o que nos recuerde a algún lugar donde estuvimos, ¿Transmite? Sí, pero a mi parecer menos que el arte conceptual, porque nos brindan todo lo que quieren que veamos, no nos hacen ver más allá de lo rústico del objeto presentado, como diría Octavio Paz, lo de Duchamp es más filosófico y crítico, sería en vano cuestionar lo estético de su obra.
Todo este punto me hizo recordar cuando por allá por cuarto año en la asignatura Lenguajes Artísticos tuvimos que hacer un trabajo: Presentar una obra de arte. Podían ser fotos, pinturas, cuentos, actos, canciones, etc. Con nuestro grupo decidimos hacer algo parecido a lo de Duchamp, mientras todos hacían lo que metódicamente se llama arte, nosotros hicimos arte conceptual, escribimos en una cebolla con un marcador “El tomate es banal”, cuando presentamos esto ante toda la clase se quedaron perplejos, todos habían hecho lo que se esperaba que hicieran, así que cuando llegó nuestro turno explicamos que eso era una obra de arte y explicamos también el por qué, pero no explicamos el significado de la obra, qué quería decir, porque para terminar el acto y que eso sea llamado una obra de arte el público debería decidir qué significado le daba a un objeto ya existente mínimamente modificado. Las respuestas fueron varias, diversas e igual de interesantes, esto hizo emocionar a la profesora, porque cada persona veía en esa cebolla algo distinto y se logró transmitir lo artístico. No voy a mentir, hicimos eso porque no teníamos ganas de hacer el trabajo, pero sin embargo logró igualmente transmitirse el espíritu de una obra de arte, desde entonces soy partidario del arte conceptual y fanático declarado de Duchamp, John Cage y otros artistas conceptuales.
