Decades ago, these devices surely gave many people in the world the opportunity to have their first contact with a telephone, since not many could have a line at home, but today, for different reasons, much of them are not used by anyone, at least that is what happens in my country.
Hace tiempo que he querido escribir sobre este tema porque he visto muchos teléfonos públicos víctimas del vandalismo en la ciudad donde vivo y en estos días me enteré que a inicios de este año 2021, la Compañía Anónima Nacional Teléfonos Venezuela, Cantv (propiedad del Estado), activó un servicio de llamadas gratuitas desde los teléfonos públicos.
I have wanted to write about this topic for a long time because I have seen many public telephones victims of vandalism in the city where I live and these days I learned that at the beginning of this year 2021, the Anonymous National Telephone Company Venezuela, Cantv (state property) activated a service of free calls from public telephones.
“Marca 1882 y tendrás 3 minutos gratuitos para realizar llamadas a teléfonos Cantv a nivel nacional”, publicó la compañía en su cuenta oficial de twitter.

Como desde hace mucho la empresa ya no comercializa tarjetas telefónicas, está buena esta iniciativa ¿no? Porque si estás en la calle, se te acaba el saldo o la batería de tu teléfono celular, o no tienes uno y necesitas hacer una llamada, los teléfonos públicos aún pueden salvarte, claro, siempre y cuando estén funcionando, porque como dije antes, muchos se han ido deteriorando por falta de mantenimiento y otros por falta de conciencia de la gente…

Una de las principales razones por la que los teléfonos públicos quedaron en desuso fue la llegada de los celulares y su masificación, lo cual facilitó el acceso a la comunicación. Sin embargo hubo un tiempo aquí en Venezuela, no hace tantos años, que las tarifas de los teléfonos públicos eran mucho más económicas que las de los celulares y Cantv tuvo mucho éxito vendiendo tarjetas telefónicas para ser usadas en estos aparatos públicos, tanto así que hasta se volvieron coleccionables porque venían con paisajes u otras cosas típicas de Venezuela.

Aquí en Venezuela, según vi en publicaciones oficiales de la Cantv, los primeros teléfonos públicos fueron instalados en la década de los ’50 del siglo XX. Al principio se usaban monedas para llamar, luego tarjetas que eran perforadas con el monto usado y más recientemente tarjetas con chip o banda magnética. Existía además la posibilidad de hacer llamadas con cobro a destino.
Here in Venezuela, as I saw in official Cantv publications, the first public telephones were installed in the 1950s. En cuanto a la cantidad de dispositivos, hoy en día, según la página web de Cantv, en Venezuela están activos unos 20.500 teléfonos públicos, una cifra baja si tomamos en cuenta que llegó a haber más de 90.000 en el año 2004.

Pero obviamente, si ya la compañía no vende tarjetas telefónicas porque poca gente las compraría debido a que los celulares hicieron que disminuyera el uso de los teléfonos públicos, no es rentable hacerles mantenimiento y por eso no han reparado los que están dañados. También, las dificultades económicas por las que atraviesa el país los últimos años han influido en esta situación.
But obviously, if the company no longer sells phone cards because few people would buy them because cell phones reduced the use of public telephones, it's not profitable to maintain them and that is why they have not repaired the damaged ones. Also, the economic difficulties that the country is going through in recent years have influenced this situation.

Acá los sacaron a todos... Me acuerdo que hasta 2011 que yo iba a la escuela había uno cerca del colegio... Después dejé de prestarle atención y ahora todos desaparecieron. Eran con monedas.

A mi me encantaba hacer llamadas desde estos teléfonos porque podía hablar el tiempo que me diera la gana sin que mi mama me estuviese controlando ni mandando a colgar el teléfono jajajaja. Sería bueno que de alguna manera volvieran a estar operativos, en buen estado y para el servicio de todos.

In Indonesia, public telephones like this are no longer functioning. Such public facilities are not well maintained here, unfortunately.
It's great if you have free calls in your country at least it really helps to communicate without having to pay more.
