A visit to Imperial Armoury and Phonomuseum.
Ein Besuch in der Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer und im Phonomuseum.
In the third part of my series about special museums in Vienna, I first take you back to the Middle Ages. I present examples of masterly craftsmanship in the production of knight's armour. Afterwards I follow the traces of Thomas A. Edison in the Phonomuseum.
Im dritten Teil meiner Serie über Spezialmuseen in Wien geht es zunächst zurück ins Mittelalter. Dabei steht die meisterliche Handwerkskunst der Plattner bei der Herstellung von Ritterrüstungen im Mittelpunkt. Anschließend begebe ich mich im Phonomuseum auf die Spuren von Edisons Erbe.
Imperial ArmouryThe former weapons collection, which is housed in the Neue Burg, belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM Vienna). The collection is worth seeing not only because of the masterpieces of craftsmanship, but also from a historical point of view, as the objects on display are closely connected with political events surrounding the ruling dynasty of Habsburg.
Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer Bei der ehemaligen Waffensammlung, die in der Neuen Burg untergebracht ist, handelt es sich um eine Außenstelle des Kunsthistorischen Museums Wien (KHM Wien). Die Sammlung ist nicht nur aufgrund der kunsthandwerklichen Meisterwerke sehenswert, sondern auch in historischer Hinsicht interessant, da die ausgestellten Objekte in engem Zusammenhang mit politischen Ereignissen rund um die Herrscherdynastie Habsburg stehen.
Armour has been used as protective gear in combat for thousands of years. Plate armour, as exhibited in the museum, was made in Western Europe from the end of the 14th century by so-called "Plattner". These were smiths who were extremely skilled in working with metal, which was difficult to work with.
Rüstungen wurden als Schutzkleidung im Kampfeinsatz bereits seit Jahrtausenden verwendet. Plattenpanzer, wie im Museum vorrangig ausgestellt, entstanden in Westeuropa gegen Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts. Sie wurden von sogenannten Plattnern gefertigt. Das waren Schmiede, die äußerst geschickt mit dem schwer zu bearbeitenden Metall umgehen konnten.
The armour, which usually covered the whole body of the knight, consisted of several metal plates shaped to fit the body, which were flexibly connected to each other by straps, rivets or hinges.
Der Harnisch, der zumeist den ganzen Körper des Ritters bedeckte, bestand aus mehreren körpergerecht geformten Platten aus Metall, die durch Riemen, Nieten oder Scharniere flexibel miteinander verbunden wurden.
The armours for representation purposes or for tournament fights were very elaborately decorated. For that the armament blacksmiths worked together with goldsmiths, silversmiths, engravers, chisellers and other artisans.
Die Rüstungen für Repräsentationszwecke oder für Turnierkämpfe wurden sehr aufwendig verziert. Die Plattner arbeiteten dafür mit Gold- und Silberschmieden, Ätzmalern, Ziseleuren sowie anderen Kunsthandwerkern zusammen.
Horses were also equipped with elaborately crafted armour.
Auch Pferde wurden mit kunstvoll gefertigten Rüstungen ausgestattet.
The knight's armours manufacture reached its peak in the 15th century. With the further development of war technology at the beginning of the 17th century, knight's armour became obsolete. The Imperial Armoury (Neue Burg, Heldenplatz) is open daily except Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Die Plattnerkunst erreichte ihren Höhepunkt im 15. Jahrhundert. Mit der Weiterentwicklung der Kriegstechnik wurden Ritterrüstungen Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts obsolet. Die Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer (Neue Burg, Heldenplatz) ist täglich außer Mittwoch von 10 bis 18 Uhr geöffnet.
Wiener PhonomuseumThe Vienna Phonomuseum, founded in 1983, is a small special museum in the 6th district that belongs to the 23 district museums of Vienna. Around 400 exhibits are presented in four showrooms, documenting over 135 years of sound recording history.

According to its website, the museum has one of the largest collections of phonographs and gramophones in Europe, which guarantees a complete documentation of the development of talking machines from 1877 to 1939.
Laut Webseite verfügt das Museum über eine der größten Sammlungen an Phonographen und Grammophonen in Europa, wodurch eine lückenlose Dokumentation der Entwicklung der Sprechmaschinen von 1877 bis 1939 gewährleistet ist.
A large part of the exhibition is dedicated to the American inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), who invented a number of media devices between 1877 and 1891. These included a "talking machine", which made it possible for the first time to record and reproduce sound waves. Edison received the patent for his "phonograph" in 1878.
Ein Großteil der Ausstellung ist dem amerikanischen Erfinder Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) gewidmet, der zwischen 1877 und 1891 eine Reihe von Mediengeräten erfand. Darunter auch eine "Sprechmaschine", mit der es erstmals gelang, Schallwellen aufzuzeichnen und wiederzugeben. Der "Phonograph" wurde 1878 patentiert.
The video (german) shows how the Edison phonograph works. At the end of the video you can hear the original sound of Edison, who, with the children's song "Mary had a little lamb", for the first time preserved a human voice for posterity on a tin foil phonograph. In 1887 Emil Berliner invented the "Gramophone", which as a pure playback device is considered the mechanical predecessor of the record player. The invention of the record also dates back to Emil Berliner.
1887 erfand Emil Berliner das "Grammophon", das als reines Abspielgerät als der mechanische Vorläufer des Plattenspielers gilt. Auch die Erfindung der Schallplatte geht auf Emil Berliner zurück.
The majority of the exhibited equipment is still fully functional and is also gladly demonstrated to the interested public. At the moment the Phonomuseum is closed, it will open again after the summer break on August 31st, 2020. As the museum is run by volunteers, the regular opening hours are limited to Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 7 pm.
Der Großteil der ausgestellten Geräte ist noch voll funktionstüchtig und wird auch gerne einem interessierten Publikum vorgeführt. Derzeit ist das Phonomuseum geschlossen, geöffnet wird wieder nach der Sommerpause am 31. August 2020. Da das Museum von ehrenamtlichen Mitarbeitern betreut wird, sind die regulären Öffnungszeiten auf Mittwoch Nachmittags von 15 bis 19 Uhr beschränkt.

Thank you, I'm fine. I keep up with the worrying situation in large parts of the USA on the news. I'm glad that you're in a safe place and are doing well. Here in Austria, the number of infected people is slowly rising again, after many restrictions have been removed. I hope for the common sense of the people, so that we are spared another lockdown.

Wenn diese ganze Covidscheisse mal vorbei ist komm ich wieder mal nach Wien. Da gibt es so viel was ich noch nicht gesehen habe.
War schon locker 20x in Österreich, aber nur einmal in Wien.
Aber Innsbruck, Salzburg und und und, ist alles schön.
In Wien gibt es zwar keine Berge wie in Innsbruck oder Salzburg, dafür aber jede Menge Sehenswürdigkeiten, wofür sich ein Besuch lohnt.
Ich war da bisher nur einmal zu einem Tagesausflug. Viel zu kurz. Aber ich komme wieder 😉
Wow! the armours are so detailed and beautiful. And the green phonograph is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
I'm also enthusiastic about the beauty of this tin "tailor-made suits". There is so much technical know-how but also a lot of artistic craftsmanship. the green funnel gramophone is really very beautiful.
There is a lot of art on them.
It is interesting to see how these armors conceived for violent encounters were so aesthetically worked. It can be said that the artisan-artist tells stories in each of its engravings.
