Yesterday was my niece's birthday and I made a dress to add to her collection of birthday dresses. Baby dresses are so easy to make because they're really small and you'd be done in no time. They make me want to have babies but a girl ain't ready for them yet. For the meantime, I'll keep making these dresses for my niece and possibly make some for sale.
For this dress, I had the main fabric used already, the upper part of the dress is from a fabric I got a while ago. I only used just a little, barely ¼ a yard even, babies are soo small. The rest of the dress is a mesh/net fabric. I got a soft net and a strong one. The strong one was used to line the insides to give the dress a full ball gown effect. I also got a yard of lining fabric and a zipper.
Making The Dress
I started off making the upper bodice pattern on the fabric using a 2 year old's measurements. I didn't have my niece's measurements so I used one from a size chart.
I cut out my drafted pattern and sewed it to the lining fabric with exact pattern.
I cut out a cap sleeve pattern and sewed on to the dress.
I then joined the front and back pieces by the sides.
To make the skirt, I gathered all the pieces of the mesh/fabric to the same width with that of the top.
I then attached the gathered mesh and lining pieces to the top.

I noticed she wasn't as attracted to the dress as she was to the other ankara print dress I made. Turns out she likes bright colors. She liked the mesh though.

Wow.. you would surely do go when you get your baby. Babies on a norms are attracted to colours and I bet if the dress you sew for her had something like rainbow colour she would want to take a lot of selfies with it.
