A SHORT STORY: THE COLD AIR

in OCD3 years ago

Mira sat on her rocking chair on her front porch, mindlessly weaving the baby dress in her hands with her crotchet pins and wool, she could do that effortlessly now, haven taken those classes in her teen years and given herself over 20 years of experience. It felt like ages now, the first dress she ever made was nothing like this in the 1990s, same colors but she never imagined the new knitting patterns that would emerge only 2 decades later. It was a yellow sweater, she remembered, she made that for Lola, her baby girl who was only 2 years old then.

Lola was such a calm baby, it's little wonder how now, 30 years later she decided to live up hill, in the middle of nowhere with her husband and 2 kids. Her kids are nothing like her, thank goodness. 4-year old Mikcey already has friends over for play dates every other weekend, and Sara, well, even at 6 you know she's a premadonna. Things were so different in Mira's days. Raising children was a family fulltime job. She never in her wildest dreams would have thought of hiring nannies the way Lola did. She and Patrick always found a way to raise their kids themselves, God knows the kind of things kids pick up from these nannies they're subjected to.

Thoughts of Patrick start flashing back. Patrick was a man. In the 40 years they spent married, well they're still technically married, death only meant they took a break. She would join him soon, she knows. Patrick was everything she wasn't, it's no wonder they always found a way to fix their disagreements so quickly. He never wanted her to work a day in her life, and he kept to his word. She took care of the kids; Lola and Emmanuel grew to be such wonderful adults. She had no regrets staying home all those years caring for them.

The next door neighbour came by flashing a smile saying hello, Mira was too deep in thought to say much so a smile and wave was all she could offer. She liked her single mom neighbour, Kelly. She was so strong and hardworking, shuffling 2 and sometimes 3 jobs every week just to keep her kids living a standard life. She never knew how she managed to afford the living expense or mortgage of a house in this neighbourhood, but she didn't care, maybe her divorce left her with more than she let on to. She however, had her home completely paid for. Patrick wasn't the kind of man to leave her alone with mortgage to pay, he was such a hard worker himself. Although, getting that government contract every other month was a huge bonus.

Emmanuel was more like Patrick. He had his looks and height. He reminded her so much of how Patrick did when they first met by the lake at Saskatoon. Emmanuel is the life of the party, it's no wonder he and his fiance drop their kids over every weekend so they can attend to one group vacation or another. She doesn't mind it. She loves having the kids over. But today, she feels, might be her last.

As she felt the cold air, she knew it was time. She put down her pins and the little dress she would never be able to complete. It would have been such a pretty dress, she thought as she placed her hands on her thighs and let the darkness and the cold air consume her into her eternity.
