Those of us who, like me, have seen the birth of the internet remember when the capacity of hard drives was measured in megabytes, RAM memory in kilobytes and communication speeds were measured in baud (symbols / sec).

The internet connection was made through modems that made a horrible noise and left the whole family cut off because we all used the only telephone connection available at home, with the consequent displeasure of our parents.

Today, at least in Spain, thanks to fiber optics one can have 300 Mbps at home for a relatively cheap price but this is ridiculous compared to the record beaten this month of 178 Tbps, that is, 178 Trillion of bits per second.

This feat has been carried out by a team of researchers from the University College of London led by Dr. Lidia Galdino, at least in tests carried out under laboratory conditions, this would allow us to download the entire Netflix catalog in less than 1 second.

To achieve this record, the researchers used frequencies much higher than usual, going from the current 4.5 THz to 17.8 THz, and the signal power was increased using special amplifiers that process each wavelength individually.

In the tests carried out, random bits were generated with a computer and sent through a 40 km long optical fiber, reaching those 178 Tbps (Terabits / second).
En las pruebas realizadas se generaron bits aleatorios con un ordenador y los enviaron a través de una fibra óptica de 40 Km de longitud consiguiendo llegar a esos 178 Tbps (Terabits/segundo).
As we have commented, this has been done under ideal conditions in a laboratory and that does not mean that in real life the same speeds can be achieved but, even so, it is a very important achievement if we take into account the enormous amount of data that are transmitted over the internet.
Como hemos comentado, esto se ha realizado en condiciones ideales en un laboratorio y eso no quiere decir que en la vida real se puedan conseguir las mismas velocidades pero, aún así, es un logro muy importante si tenemos en cuenta la cantidad ingente de datos que se transmiten por internet.

Indeed the internet is getting faster and faster though the pic of the 14.4 kbps modem reminds me of the early day of internet when it was all new and exciting.
Those were the days of win 95 and the sound of dial up modem dialing on our phone lines
It sure brings back nostalgia
