In 2012, when MIT graduate students Ben Calhoun and Dave Wentzloff founded the Everactive company, experts predicted that in a few years we would have over a trillion connected IoT devices, at that time these students already realized that it would be impossible to manage and maintain a trillion batteries.

This number of devices need at least one battery each, so even with an average battery life of 10 years, 270 million batteries need to be changed every day, which is totally unfeasible, especially if we take into account that the majority of these devices are located in places that are difficult to access.
