The Covid 19 crisis warns us to prepare for upcoming crises of the future

This year, our lifestyles have been modified due to Covid 19 virus. However, have we reflected on the lessons, the Carona virus pandemic has given us? . In my view, even before this Covid 19 crisis, the world looked to be doomed due to the growing imminence of climate change.

Let’s face it, in future problems of water scarcity, air pollution, droughts, floods all looked dire. The world was heading towards a climate emergency, and we urgently needed to change our ways quickly to stop further deterioration of our environment and endanger the survival of our own entire species.

The Corona lockdown temporarily paused mankind’s damaging spree on environment

Then the Carona virus pandemic forced a lockdown throughout the world.

Thanks to this lockdown - where industries shut down and human movement was curtailed, there happened a natural cleansing process of the environment with air quality becoming good, rivers and lakes getting cleaner, clear skies so clear you can do star gazing which was not possible earlier due to severe light pollution in populated Cities.

Outdoor life became beautiful, filled with the charms of nature and the irony here was that it was because most of us humans were locked indoors this time, and we could not enjoy much of the outdoor beauty being stuck indoors.

Now back to the usual polluting spree as lockdown has been eased

Now, with lockdowns having been eased all the environmental benefits that earth got are melted off , so now, it’s back to human civilization polluting the natural elements of mother earth ( air, water, soil).

The Carona virus pandemic has exposed us these life truths

Job security is not guaranteed even for the educated, so please develop and grow your skills

Carona virus showed us that all though we feel secured having a stable job, an educational degree, we are not immune to disasters of unemployment. All though our life most of us have been tuned to focus on studies to get a high paying job, but in reality there is no guarantee on that.

Ultimately your actual skills matter, your focus on learning and growing to develop further skills and practical insights helps. Skills are not just academic skills but practical life skills that are dynamic in nature.

We are not prepared for other upcoming crises of tomorrow

Corona virus has shown us how insecure we are despite having wealth. Most of the world’s Governments have shown us that tomorrow when a climate emergency comes - severe water crisis, poisonous unhealthy air to breath, severe floods they don’t have capability of managing it. However, they will dictate the public to stay indoors, wear masks, impose rationing on water, when these Governments have never done enough to avert this situation in the first place.

Sounds similar to what’s going on now na…? and guaranteed the cost of oxygen cylinders and water will comprise our major expenses of tomorrow as sale of those otherwise freely available resources will become a business tomorrow!!

Our comfortable living is possible due to the labour of many who are not paid enough!!

Corona virus has shown us how we depend on so many people who do work for which they are not paid enough (atleast in India). Start from farmers who produce something so vital as food produce but don’t make a living, to factory workers who are involved in the processes of manufacturing goods, but are not given enough protection even though they work in hazardous conditions prevalent in factories. Most of these people, including our house domestic help don’t have basic things for their security like health insurance, life insurance, PPF etc.

There is exploitation of the labour class, and countries like India are having labour protection laws further weakened so industry workers and others can be exploited by industries, companies etc.

A prevalent economic system that is prospering by destroying Nature

Our world has an economy which functions by destroying the environment - forests, rivers, lakes, air, soil and the educated people like us are part and parcel of this system. Industries release effluents into rivers polluting them, cutting trees from forests to meet our needs of paper, furniture, homes, offices, institutions etc.

Society has accepted Governments and big Corporation to have power and ownership of basic things like water, as they dam rivers in the name of development although more sustainable ways of providing electricity has been there for years;solar power being one. As a result, rivers are dried up, and they are a important source of fresh water for us.

Forests have been destroyed not just by cutting trees, but through mining. Mining releases poisonous chemicals into water bodies, soil and make lands inhabitable. Forests are natural areas that trap and absorb all those carbon gases in exchange for fresh clean air with oxygen with less of trees there, carbon gases stay on earth to kill us slowly, plus forest trees are required to trap rain water, that goes back to rivers, it’s a nourishing ecosystem which human species have destroyed.

To be continued. Next article will delve on what we can do to save ourselves by being actively involved in taking action and being part of a community.

Sort:

the desire for power of some who don't care about the world they live in caused the world to get sick from this pandemic

Very true!!

Wish everything is over soon :)
