Importance of Technology in Agriculture [Emphasis on Crop Production]

in Project HOPE3 years ago

Very many years ago, during the days of our forefathers, the practice of agriculture was very laborious and was heavily dependent on manual physical labour from the farmers. At that point in history, there was almost nothing glorious about farming and it was often looked upon as third-class occupation. Well, all that changed with the introduction of farm implements.

With the advent of farm implements, the work became a little easier but it was still labour-intensive because the farmers will have to wield the implement themselves. With time, human labour was gradually replaced by animal assistance. That was when people started using animal (like oxen) to power some of these farm implements.

However, during the first industrial revolution that took place around the 18th century, machines were created and some of these machines were incorporated into the farming sector and that was the beginning of farm mechanization and it marked a major breakthrough in farming in a way that, at this present time, farming is no longer considered as a third-class occupation.

At every point of the advancement in farming, one thing was evident and that is the assistance and gradually replacement of human labour. This, no doubts, has its downturn but we are only focusing on how it has been of positive impact. During the days of manual human labour in farming, you will agree with me that production will be limited because of the limits of human ability.

In this era of farm mechanization, production has been boosted and this has impact positively both to the economy and the GDP as large farm produce are now being exported and traded in the global market. In Nigeria, for example, agriculture has formed a major part of the Gross Domestic Product and this can be linked to the application of technology to agriculture. Imagine if farm works were done with only hoe and cutlass, how will the face of farming be like?

At this present time, we have tractor-powered machines like the planters, harvesters, sprayers, weeders, etc. All these are to make the work easier and better. If you depend solely on your physical labour, at a point, you will get tired and diminishing returns may come into play.

Another benefit of the application of mechanization to farming is speed and an increased production within a shorter time. Not just speed, but complementing it with precision. This is what gave rise to "Precision Agriculture", where even ICT, Artificial Intelligence and other technologies (robots, drones, androids, gps sensors etc) are being incorporated into agriculture to make farming better, faster, and more accurate.

Peace on y'all

Tech would eventually make agriculture even better in the future and mechanisation is only the beginning. Nicely written. @tipu curate.

That's right. Better, easier, more efficient and faster. Thanks a lot bro

Technology is now playing a vital role in the agricultural sector, this is really interesting I must say. With the aid of it, we are saying bye bye to the time consumer moment back then. With machines you can carry out task that will last days with manual labour in just less than 3hrs. This is the reason we must embrace technogy in the agricultural field.

Yes, technology is now assisting with labour-intensive works and now simplifying them. It is amazing how technology has found application in almost every aspect of our lives.

Thanks bro

Hello friend @samminator.

Another excellent article that you share with us this time, technological applications reach any area of our lives, and here you show us one of the most important of these applications in the essential agricultural area, an area of great interest to all of us for the generation of our food items.

Thank you brother for sharing such an important article with all of us. Greetings.
